France World Cup Winner Olivier Giroud Signals Possible Retirement After This Season
Just before turning 40 on Wednesday, Olivier Giroud suggested in an interview with L'Équipe that he might retire after the upcoming season. "I believe this will probably be my last year as a player. That's why I'm savoring every moment," said the 2018 World Cup winner, who currently plays for Lille.
Career Highlights and Legacy
Giroud began his professional journey at Grenoble back in 2006, so by next year, he will have spent 21 years on the pitch. Over this long career, he became the all-time leading scorer for the French national team, earning 137 caps and scoring 57 goals. Alongside his international success, Giroud claimed several club titles.
- French Champion: Montpellier
- FA Cups Won: Four, with Arsenal and Chelsea
- Europa League: 2019
- Champions League: 2021
In July 2025, he returned to France to join Lille, which seems set to be his final chapter in professional football.
