Inter's Josep Martinez Confident in Italy's Rebound After World Cup Setbacks
Josep Martinez, goalkeeper for Inter Milan, has expressed confidence in Italy's ability to bounce back after missing out on three straight World Cups. The Spanish keeper believes the national team still boasts top talent despite recent struggles and sees mental recovery as key to their revival.
Talent Remains Despite Challenges
Martinez points out that Italy's issues on the international stage aren’t about player quality but rather mindset. The failure to qualify for multiple World Cups shook the four-time champions’ confidence deeply. Roberto Mancini now leads a rebuilding effort, bringing in fresh young players to reshape Italy’s style and spirit.
Mental Strength Over Technical Skills
Having shared Serie A pitches with many of Italy's best, Martinez insists their skill level is high. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said, "Honestly, I see a lot of potential in Italy. They need to rediscover a defined playing model, but there’s no lack of quality. There are several high-level Inter players and many other valid elements with them. They need to regain confidence after the disappointment of missing the World Cup; for me, it’s more a mental thing than a quality issue."
Martinez's Return to International Football
On a personal note, Martinez recently earned a surprise recall to Spain’s national squad after an injury opened a spot. At 28, this is his first call-up since his lone senior appearance in June 2021. He joins established keepers David Raya and Unai Simon in Luis de la Fuente’s lineup.
Upcoming Test Against France
Italy faces a crucial challenge on Friday when they visit France at the Stade de France for the Nations League Group A1 clash. Mancini must craft a clever approach to counter the French squad led by Zinedine Zidane. A positive result is essential to boost morale and keep hopes alive for advancing beyond the group stage.
