Francesco Totti Claims Italy's 2006 World Cup Victory Depended on Him

Roma legend Francesco Totti recently joked that Italy’s triumph at the 2006 World Cup wouldn’t have happened without his key role and tournament-leading four assists. He reflected on how that victory helped elevate him from a local hero to a global football icon.

Totti Reflects on His Role in Italy’s Greatest Achievement

Known for his loyalty to Roma, Totti says it was winning the 2006 World Cup in Germany that truly boosted his international reputation. Speaking with Corriere dello Sport on his 50th birthday, he revealed how lifting the trophy changed the way he was seen beyond Rome.

A Bold Statement About the Final

Totti is convinced that being part of Marcello Lippi's squad was vital to Italy's success. With a smile, he said, "If I hadn’t played, they wouldn’t have won it." He added that this victory gave him recognition outside of Rome. Despite playing at only 40% fitness, he felt he contributed significantly. He said many players never get to win a World Cup.

Playing Through Injury

His claim about limited fitness is accurate. In February 2006, Totti suffered a fractured left ankle requiring emergency surgery. He worked hard to recover just in time for the tournament.

Even with limited sharpness, Totti started six out of seven matches for Italy, scoring once and providing four assists — the highest assist count of the competition. Reflecting on his peak years, he said, "Between 2001 and 2008, I felt really good. I was ’embarrassing’ for how strong I felt."

Leadership Without Loud Words

Totti often faced criticism for not being vocal in the dressing room. He did not dispute this, explaining that he believed actions on the pitch mattered most. "Outside the field, everyone talks. They’d ask why I don’t say something to the team before games. But I have to play football and enjoy myself. I never felt tension before a match," he said.
