WBC Mandates Lightweight Title Fight Between William Zepeda and Jadier Herrera
The World Boxing Council has made an unusual move by ordering a unification bout between reigning lightweight champion William Zepeda and interim titleholder Jadier Herrera. Both fighters have until October 20th to reach an agreement for the fight.
Background of the Fighters and Titles
After Shakur Stevenson moved up in weight to challenge for super lightweight honors against Teofimo Lopez, the WBC sanctioned an interim title bout between Herrera, who is undefeated at 18-0 with 16 knockouts, and veteran Ricardo Nunez. Herrera dominated Nunez to claim the interim championship. Meanwhile, Stevenson was stripped of his WBC lightweight title due to unpaid sanctioning fees.
Rather than simply promote Herrera or assign him to a vacant belt fight, the WBC let Zepeda (34-1, 27 KOs) face Lamont Roach Jr. for the full lightweight championship this past August, where Zepeda emerged victorious.
Implications for the Lightweight Division
Zepeda presents a tough challenge for anyone in the lightweight ranks following Stevenson's departure. Although only 24 years old and with a notable win over a lesser opponent, his recent victory solidifies his position. The fight has strong backing from promoter Frank Warren and Zepeda himself, signaling a likely showdown unless Zepeda pursues other options like a unification with Abdullah Mason or vacating the belt.
Upcoming Timeline
- Order Date: Early October 2026
- Deadline for Agreement: October 20, 2026
- Zepeda's Record: 34 wins, 1 loss, 27 KOs
- Herrera's Record: 18 wins, 0 losses, 16 KOs
