Milan Target Ruben Dias as Defensive Leader
Milan have set their sights on a new defensive leader, and a heavyweight name has landed on their list: Ruben Dias.
Ruben Amorim has made it clear he wants to reinforce the back line, and in a summer where Milan have leaned heavily on Jorge Mendes’ network, the Manchester City centre-back has moved into view. Mendes has been in Milan for talks on several fronts, and during those conversations the idea of prising Dias away from the Premier League champions took shape.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, initial contacts over a potential deal have already taken place, almost certainly involving Mendes at the heart of the discussions. Dias, 29, is understood to be on City’s transfer list, a detail that immediately caught Milan’s attention.
His profile ticks several boxes for the Rossoneri hierarchy. The age is right for a defender entering his peak years, and there is a sense that his recent injury issues — which have dented his status over the last two seasons — could create an opening. Milan see a chance to move for a top-tier defender whose market value is no longer at its absolute peak.
On paper, the connection is obvious. Mendes represents both Dias and Amorim, and Milan have already shown a willingness to work closely with the Portuguese super-agent this summer. The pathway is there.
Reality, though, is far more complicated.
City have already lost Rodri in this window and are deeply reluctant to let another cornerstone of their spine depart. Removing Dias from Pep Guardiola’s defence would mean replacing not just a starter, but a leader, at a time when the squad is already absorbing a major loss in midfield.
Then there is the financial wall Milan would have to climb. Even with his stock slightly down, Dias remains an expensive proposition in terms of fee and wages. For a club that still has to balance ambition with sustainability, the numbers would be extremely hard to make work.
So the idea is on the table, the conversations have started, and the lines between Milan, Mendes and Manchester City are open. But right now, Ruben Dias to San Siro looks more like a bold dream than an imminent coup — and Milan must decide how far they are willing to push for a defender of this calibre in a market that rarely forgives hesitation.
