Joao Cancelo Returns to Barcelona for Good

Joao Cancelo is back at Barcelona, this time for good.

The Portugal full-back has signed a three-year deal at Camp Nou after mutually terminating his contract with Al-Hilal, ending a brief and winding chapter in Saudi Arabia and closing the door on his Manchester City career.

“I’m where I want to be and I am very happy,” Cancelo said. “I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club.”

For a player who has spent the last few years living out of suitcases and loan agreements, the word “permanent” carries extra weight.

A long road back to Camp Nou

Cancelo left Manchester City for Al-Hilal in 2024 on a three-year contract, part of the wave of big-name moves to the Saudi Pro League. His stay never truly settled. He finished last season on loan at Barca, playing a key role as they surged to the La Liga title.

That spell reminded both club and player how well the fit works. Once his Al-Hilal deal was ripped up this summer, the 32-year-old hit the market as a free agent. Barcelona moved quickly, turning last season’s temporary fix into a long-term solution.

This will be Cancelo’s third stint wearing Barca colours but his first as a fully owned player. He arrived from Manchester City on a season-long loan in 2023-24, having already spent the second half of 2022-23 at Bayern Munich in another short-term deal.

A career built on movement

Cancelo’s journey across Europe has been relentless. He first touched down in Spain in 2014, leaving Benfica for Valencia on loan before making the move stick. From there, he sampled Serie A with Inter Milan on loan in 2017-18, then joined Juventus in 2018 as his reputation as an attacking full-back exploded.

Manchester City followed in 2019, where he became one of Pep Guardiola’s most tactically flexible players, before a series of loans hinted at an inevitable parting of ways. Bayern, then Barca, then Al-Hilal. Now, finally, a settled address in Catalonia.

Familiar faces, new era

Barcelona’s rebuild has another thread of continuity. The club also wrapped up the signing of Cancelo’s former Manchester City team-mate Rodri this week, agreeing a fee of about £65m for the Spain midfielder.

Cancelo gets the stability he has chased for years. Barca get a title-winning full-back who already knows the dressing room and the demands. With Rodri joining him from City, the spine of this new Barcelona is starting to look very familiar — and very serious.
