Manchester United vs Hull City: Premier League Opening Day Preview
Manchester United’s second‑half specialists are back, but this time there are no free hits, no soft landings, and no midweek breathers in Europe.
Last season, no Premier League side scored more points after the turn of the year than United’s 41 from 19 games. Michael Carrick rode that surge from January, liberated by a schedule stripped of European distraction. Now comes the hard part: proving it wasn’t a one‑off once the Champions League kicks in.
Before that, a different kind of test: a newly-promoted Hull City side, a lunchtime kick-off, and a stadium itching for a statement.
Hull’s long road back
Hull return to the Premier League a decade after they last left it, having slipped into the Championship playoffs in sixth place and then held their nerve at Wembley, edging Middlesbrough 1-0 in the final. It wasn’t glamorous, it wasn’t dominant, but it was enough.
Now they open at the MKM Stadium, 12.30pm BST on Saturday, August 22, with the cameras rolling. TNT Sports 1 and TNT Sports Ultimate carry the pictures in the UK from midday, while TalkSPORT has full commentary for those on the move.
The problem for Sergej Jakirovic is that his squad already looks like it has been through a month of fixtures.

are all ruled out. Cody Drameh and Matty Jacob are battling the clock and will be checked closer to kick-off. For a club just back in the division, that is a brutal opening injury list.
The atmosphere will carry them part of the way. The depth chart might not.
Carrick’s balancing act
Carrick walks into this campaign with expectation turned up. United are being talked about as outside title contenders, fifth favourites at 9/1 behind Arsenal (6/5), Man City (7/2), Liverpool (11/2) and Chelsea (8/1). The numbers from last spring back up the optimism. The calendar, packed now with Champions League nights, will test it.
He is expected to go bold from the start.
Summer signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are in line to start as United chase a record 23rd win in Premier League opening fixtures. The spine is changing, but the ambition is not.
Up front, Benjamin Sesko has returned to training after a shin problem but remains a doubt. Bryan Mbeumo, sharp and direct across pre-season, is set to lead the line again after impressing there in the warm-up games.
At the back, there is a hint of the new and the old. Youngster Ayden Heaven could be thrown in alongside Harry Maguire, with Lisandro Martinez only just back after going all the way to the World Cup final with Argentina. It’s a big call for an opening day, but Carrick has not shied away from them so far.
There is more frustration elsewhere. Mason Mount, excellent in pre-season before a foot injury in a 1-1 draw with PSG, faces a late fitness test. Matthijs de Ligt is training again after a back injury that has kept him out since November, but this fixture comes too early. Manuel Ugarte is out for the long term after a serious knee injury suffered with Uruguay at the World Cup. Karl Darlow, like Sesko, has only just rejoined training after missing all of pre-season and may only make the bench at best.
Carrick’s options look strong on paper. The medical bulletin tells a more complicated story.
History, odds and one-way traffic?
The bookmakers are not wrestling with doubt. United are heavy favourites at 4/11 to win at the MKM Stadium. Hull are 7/1 to finally break their Premier League duck against United, with the draw priced at 4/1.
The history is stark. In 10 previous Premier League meetings, Hull have never beaten United. United have won eight of those games. They have also never lost in the top flight when facing a newly-promoted team on the opening weekend, winning nine of 12 such fixtures.
Carrick’s personal record only tilts the scales further: four wins from six managerial meetings with Hull.
So the market leans hard in one direction. That pushes the value elsewhere.
Bruno Fernandes, who set a Premier League record with 21 assists last season, is 13/8 to register another here. With Mbeumo having scored three times in pre-season and likely to spearhead the attack, the combination is eye-catching: Fernandes to assist and Mbeumo to score anytime comes in at 7/2.
The numbers say this should be routine. The injuries, the European distraction on the horizon and the raw energy of a promoted side say it might not be.
If Carrick’s United really are ready to move from momentum to maturity, this is exactly the kind of opening day they have to own.
