Barcelona Signs Joao Cancelo to Permanent Deal Until 2029
Barcelona finally have Joao Cancelo for keeps.
The Catalan club confirmed on its official X account that the Portuguese full-back has signed a three-year contract, tying him to Spotify Camp Nou until 2029 and ending a long, drawn-out negotiation process.
Earlier reports had indicated Cancelo would arrive on a free transfer after reaching an agreement with Al-Hilal to terminate his deal in exchange for waiving the remainder of his salary. Barcelona have not disclosed financial details, but the move closes a saga that has followed the defender all summer.
Third spell, first time as a Barça player
This is Cancelo’s third stint in Barcelona colours, but the first as a permanent signing. He initially joined on loan from Manchester City for the 2023-24 season, then returned on another temporary deal from Al-Hilal in the second half of last season.
Across that season and a half in Catalonia, the 32-year-old became a regular feature in the side. He played 65 matches in all competitions, scored six goals and delivered nine assists, adding the La Liga title to his CV last season.
Now, he comes back not as a short-term fix, but as a long-term piece in Barcelona’s defensive puzzle.
Exit from Al-Hilal
Cancelo’s departure draws a line under a curious chapter in Saudi Arabia. He joined Al-Hilal in the summer of 2024 and spent two seasons on their books, but was cut from the domestic squad last season and ended up playing only one of those campaigns.
In that single active season for the Riyadh club, he still produced: 45 appearances in all competitions, three goals and 14 assists. Yet it brought no silverware, a stark contrast to his title-winning return with Barcelona.
A busy Barcelona window
His arrival continues a busy and ambitious summer at Camp Nou. Cancelo becomes Barcelona’s fifth signing of the window, following Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri and Jesse Bisiou, while the club also activated a purchase clause for young Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim.
A familiar face, a permanent deal, and a back line reshaped once again. Barcelona have made their move; now Cancelo has six more years in Catalonia to prove this was the right one.
