Sheffield Wednesday Sign Kieran Morrison on Loan from Liverpool
Sheffield Wednesday have moved to sharpen their attacking edge with the season-long loan signing of highly rated Liverpool winger Kieran Morrison.
The 19-year-old, a right-sided forward and full Northern Ireland international, arrives at Hillsborough on the back of a breakout year in Liverpool’s youth ranks and a first taste of senior football for both club and country.
A rising talent leaves Anfield – for now
Morrison made his first-team debut for Liverpool in October, coming off the bench in the Carabao Cup last-16 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield. He featured again in March, introduced as a substitute in the FA Cup win away at Wolves, as Jürgen Klopp dipped into the academy during his final season in charge.
Born in Manchester but capped by Northern Ireland, Morrison lit up Premier League 2 last term. Operating mainly off the right, he produced 15 goals and seven assists for Liverpool’s Under-21s, form that earned him a place on the shortlist for Premier League Two Player of the Year.
Liverpool moved quickly to secure his future, handing him a new four-year contract in May. A month later, he stepped onto the international stage, making his senior Northern Ireland debut in their friendly victory over Guinea in June.
“The rebuild is now”
Now comes the next test: League One and the expectation that comes with the blue and white of Wednesday.
Speaking to the Owls’ website, Morrison did not hide the scale of the move in his mind. He called Wednesday “a massive club with great history and even better fans” and made it clear he wants to be part of what he described as a rebuild already under way.
He talked up the quality of the squad and the demands of the division, but stressed his belief that Wednesday “can do really well in this league” and his determination to help “in any way possible”. His personal target is simple enough: show the supporters and manager why Wednesday pushed to bring him in, and prove he belongs at this level.
High-intensity fit
Owls sporting director Simon Wilson underlined why Wednesday were so keen to strike a deal. He labelled Morrison “a player with huge potential” and highlighted the fit between the winger’s game and the club’s style – a high-intensity pressing side that wants to “play and run forward”, mirroring the demands placed on him at Liverpool.
Wilson was clear the loan has to work both ways. Wednesday expect to benefit from Morrison’s quality this season, but they also see a responsibility to send him back to Anfield “a better player and a better person”.
One detail said plenty about the player’s mindset. Wilson revealed the call to sound out Morrison about the move was the “shortest player call” the club have made, such was the teenager’s enthusiasm to join. He “cannot wait to get started”.
He will not have to wait long. Morrison is available for selection for Thursday’s League One fixture at Hillsborough against Bradford City, the first chance for Wednesday’s supporters to see whether this loan can ignite both a young career and a club intent on climbing again.
