Genk Signs Promising Right-Back Kevin Amaro from Liverpool Montevideo
Genk have dipped into South America again – and they’re backing their formula.
The Belgian club have confirmed the signing of Uruguay right-back Kevin Amaro on a five-year deal from Liverpool Montevideo, the capital-based side that has quietly become a steady producer of talent. At 22, Amaro arrives as the latest in a line of Latin American full-backs Genk hope to polish and push on to the very top.
They have history here. Daniel Muñoz came in from Colombia, developed into one of the league’s standout defenders and left to win European silverware with Crystal Palace. Inside the club, there’s a clear belief that Amaro can trace a similar path.
He is not a late bloomer, but his rise has been gradual rather than explosive. Amaro made his Liverpool debut in the 2022 season, then really forced his way into the picture in 2024. That year he played 42 games and scored once, a first full campaign that marked him out as a reliable presence rather than a highlight-reel star.
The numbers stayed strong. In 2025 he featured 34 times, again with one goal, and he has already clocked 17 appearances this season before Genk moved to close the deal. Those figures tell their own story: coaches trust him. They pick him, week after week.
Versatility only adds to his appeal. Amaro can operate anywhere down the right flank, from orthodox full-back to a more advanced role, giving Genk tactical flexibility in a league where wide areas are often decisive. He has also been capped by Uruguay, earning a handful of appearances that underline his status as one of the more promising players in his position from the region.
He walks into a dressing room still finding its feet. Genk have opened their Belgian Pro League campaign with one win and one defeat, a start that leaves questions hanging over consistency and balance. A dynamic, defensively switched-on right-sider could tilt that equation.
Now the challenge is clear: can Kevin Amaro turn a smart scouting bet into the next big success story in Genk’s Latin American pipeline?
