Barcelona's Market Moves: Cancelo and Rodri Await Unveiling
Barcelona’s busy week in the market has turned into a waiting game.
The club is on the verge of wrapping up two headline arrivals in Joao Cancelo and Rodri, but only one of them is expected to step into the spotlight at the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly.
Cancelo deal done – but not yet “official”
Joao Cancelo is already in Barcelona. The Portuguese full-back has signed, he’s back in the city he pushed so hard to return to, and he’s made his intentions clear with a major personal sacrifice: he has given up the salary he was due for the remainder of his contract at Al Hilal to make this move happen.
Yet fans are still waiting for the official announcement.
According to Victor Navarro, Barcelona do not plan to confirm the Cancelo deal immediately. The formal announcement could be pushed back by two to three days, despite the agreement being in place and the player already on the ground.
The exact reason for the delay remains unclear. Some final details between Barcelona and Al Hilal may still need to be tied up, while the club’s media and sporting focus is trained on Rodri’s big unveiling around the Joan Gamper trophy clash.
For Cancelo, the wait is just the final hurdle. His determination has been obvious throughout the saga, and the former Juventus defender is desperate to pull on the Barcelona shirt again.
No Gamper minutes for Cancelo or Rodri
The timing of the announcement has a direct consequence: Cancelo will not feature in the Joan Gamper trophy match against Al Ahly.
Barcelona are not expected to use Rodri either. The Spanish international is set to be presented to the fans during the event, but that does not extend to minutes on the pitch.
The real target is the league.
Both Cancelo and Rodri are expected to be available for Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Elche on August 23, when the competitive season truly begins and the spotlight sharpens.
That is where the first real selection question arrives.
Balde under pressure
If Cancelo is cleared and ready for the opener, all eyes will turn to the battle on the flanks. Alejandro Balde’s pre-season form has been underwhelming, and the contrast with Cancelo’s experience and attacking quality will be impossible to ignore.
Does Cancelo walk straight into the side ahead of Balde? Or does the academy product get one more chance to convince?
Barcelona’s paperwork might be slow this week. The decisions on the pitch will not be.
