Liverpool Firm on Cody Gakpo as Tottenham Eyes Savinho
Liverpool are expected to shut the door on Tottenham Hotspur’s move for Cody Gakpo, forcing Roberto De Zerbi and the Spurs hierarchy to go all-in on Manchester City winger Savinho instead.
Liverpool stand firm on Gakpo
Gakpo has emerged as a prime attacking target for De Zerbi, who wants the Dutchman and Savinho to spearhead a revamped, fluid forward line at Tottenham. Both are seen as flexible, high-quality options capable of operating across the front three.
Tottenham have already strengthened in defence and midfield for their new head coach. The next phase of the rebuild is clear: add pace and goals out wide.
Spurs made their move. Personal terms with Gakpo are understood to be agreed, and the 27-year-old has informed Liverpool of his desire to leave. A bid in the region of £60million is being lined up, a figure that would seriously test Liverpool’s resolve.
Liverpool, though, are holding a far higher valuation. The club are said to want at least £60m and potentially as much as £70m to even consider a sale. They also believe the player is trending upwards again.
Gakpo endured an inconsistent campaign last season but rediscovered his edge at the World Cup, scoring three times before the Netherlands’ surprise exit to Morocco. That resurgence has continued into pre-season under new boss Andoni Iraola.
According to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook, Liverpool’s internal view could kill the deal before it ever reaches the home straight.
“I don’t think it will happen. Speaking to sources at Liverpool they think he’s had a good pre-season under Iraola, they think he’s a player that Iraola can get the best out of,” Crook said, via Last Word on Spurs. “I think he probably would be open to the move, but at the moment that’s not one I expect to happen between now and deadline day.”
The message is blunt: Gakpo might be willing, but Liverpool are not.
Spurs turn the spotlight on Savinho
With Gakpo likely out of reach for now, De Zerbi and Spurs are set to pour their energy into prising Savinho away from Manchester City.
Tottenham have already agreed personal terms with the Brazilian winger. This is not a new admiration; they held talks last summer as well, only to be rebuffed when City refused to sell. Savinho later signed a new contract at the Etihad, seemingly closing the door.
That door has creaked open again. Spurs believe a deal can be done this time.
According to The Times, negotiations are under way over a huge £85m move for the 22-year-old. Earlier expectations had Savinho valued at around £60-65m, but the landscape has shifted. To get City to the table, Tottenham now look prepared to raise their offer dramatically.
An £85m fee would place Savinho among the most expensive signings in the club’s history, yet recent business shows Spurs are not flinching at big numbers. The arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have underlined the board’s willingness to back De Zerbi heavily and build a squad capable of pushing back into European contention.
Gakpo may be staying at Anfield, but Tottenham’s intent in the market is unmistakable. If City finally blink over Savinho, De Zerbi’s wide options – and Spurs’ ambitions – will look very different by the time the window closes.
