Atletico Madrid Fans React to Alvarez's Absence
Atletico Madrid cruised to a 2-0 win over Malaga at the Metropolitano, but the loudest noise of the night was reserved for a player who never stepped onto the pitch.
Alvarez, left out of Diego Simeone’s squad, became the invisible centre of attention. His name never appeared on the teamsheet, yet it echoed around the stands, wrapped in anger and frustration.
The Argentine forward’s comments during the recent World Cup – when he publicly pushed for a move away from the club – have clearly not faded from memory. A section of the home support made that perfectly clear. Whistles cut through the evening air, hostile chants rolled down from the stands, all aimed at a striker who was nowhere near the touchline.
Every Atletico goal, every attack, sat against that backdrop of resentment.
Simeone backs the fans’ stance
Once the final whistle confirmed a comfortable league victory, the focus quickly shifted from the three points to the missing forward. In the press room, Simeone faced the inevitable question: what did he make of the reception for his wantaway star?
He did not flinch.
"I have great respect for our people," Simeone said, making his position plain. He then widened the lens to the transfer market itself. "We are open – as we always say – to specific possibilities. You know this after 15 years, I always say that until the window closes, I am open to anything that might happen. That doesn't mean I'm talking about any specific individual, is that clear?"
It was a familiar Simeone stance: absolute backing for the supporters, total pragmatism on squad decisions, and no public guarantees for any player, Alvarez included.
Transfer tension and a race against time
The uncertainty around Alvarez’s future now hangs over the final stretch of the window. The forward wants out. A vocal part of the fanbase has turned against him. The club must decide whether to cash in or attempt a fragile reconciliation.
Simeone, though, kept his gaze on the bigger picture. He underlined his belief in the backing from the Atletico hierarchy and made his priority crystal clear: build a powerful squad before the deadline slams shut.
"Right, I’ve always said this, and not just now," he continued. "We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had. And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline."
The message was blunt. No player sits above the construction of the group. Not even a high-profile Argentine forward.
Crucial days ahead
Atletico now walk a tightrope. They must steer through the closing days of the market while trying to defuse, or at least manage, the rift between Alvarez and a support that prides itself on loyalty and sacrifice.
A sale would draw a line under the saga. Keeping him would demand careful work in the dressing room and in the stands.
There is no time to dwell. Villarreal visit the Metropolitano on Sunday in La Liga, with Simeone already planning for the next battle. Whether Alvarez is still part of that plan when the window shuts is the question that now defines Atletico’s start to the new campaign.
