Leao’s Future Uncertain as Amorim's Wingers Shine
Rafael Leao spent the end of last season talking about a new adventure. England or Spain. A fresh league, a different spotlight, a new challenge away from San Siro.
Two weeks from the end of the transfer window, that move has not arrived.
No concrete offers, no decisive bid, just a growing sense that the 27-year-old Portugal international may be staying put in Milan for at least another year. His absence from the latest pre-season outing only deepened the sense of mystery.
While Leao watched on, Ruben Amorim enjoyed himself in Wroclaw.
His side put four past his former club United, a ruthless display built on sharp movement and clinical finishing. Samuel Chukwueze struck. Alphadjo Cisse joined in. Goncalo Ramos found the net. Ruben Loftus-Cheek added his name to the list. Four goals, four different scorers, and a manager with plenty to smile about.
Leao was nowhere to be seen.
He reported a muscle twinge before kick-off and did not feature at all. Amorim, speaking to TMW, moved quickly to calm any panic over the winger’s fitness: “I don't think it's a serious thing, but I don't know if he'll be ready.”
The uncertainty over his body mirrors the uncertainty over his future.
Asked directly where Leao stands in the pecking order and how he fits into an increasingly crowded competition out wide, Amorim did not dodge the issue. He chose clarity instead.
“I don't know, but Leao is one of our players. I've already said that we're happy to have him, he's a valuable player. So we'll see, but he has to fight.”
That last line felt deliberate. A message, not just a comment.
Because while Leao waits for the move he wanted, others are seizing their moment. Cisse, in particular, forced his way into the conversation with his performance in Wroclaw. His energy and impact did not go unnoticed by his coach.
“I think Cisse, with the way that he played, will make things difficult,” Amorim admitted.
The list does not end there. Alexis Saelemaekers has reinvented himself in a new role. Christian Pulisic is on his way back and will demand minutes. Chukwueze has already underlined his threat.
“We also have [Christian] Pulisic coming back, so we will have a lot of players who will be fighting for that place,” Amorim added.
The message is clear: status counts for less than form. Reputation will not protect anyone.
Leao once looked like an automatic starter, a winger around whom systems were built. Now, with time running out in the window and competition tightening around him, he faces a different kind of challenge.
If the move abroad does not come, the real battle may be at San Siro, and it will be fought every week on the training pitch and under the floodlights.
