Liam Delap's Future: Chelsea Exit and Premier League Options

Chelsea’s clear-out under Xabi Alonso is gathering pace, and one of the most intriguing names on the block is a striker who barely had time to settle.

Liam Delap, 23, has been pushed towards the exit at Stamford Bridge after a bruising first season in west London in which he never truly got going. One Premier League goal, constant fitness problems, and a place slipping down the pecking order have left him firmly in the “surplus to requirements” bracket.

Yet the chase for his signature is anything but low key.

Fabregas wants Delap – but there’s a catch

In Italy, Cesc Fabregas is driving Como’s ambitious project and has turned his attention back to England. According to talkSPORT, the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder wants Delap to spearhead his attack and is prepared to offer him something Chelsea can’t right now: guaranteed importance and Champions League football.

On paper, it’s a compelling pitch. A fresh start, a starring role, European nights by the lake.

Delap, though, is not convinced.

The forward is understood to prefer staying in the Premier League, even if that means stepping into a relegation scrap rather than a continental campaign. His stance instantly complicates Como’s pursuit and opens the door for domestic rivals.

Chelsea set their price

Chelsea, for their part, are ready to deal. They have to be. The squad is bloated, the wage bill heavy, and the deadline in September is coming fast.

The hierarchy have set a £40m asking price for Delap. That figure would bank a £10m profit on a player who, in league terms at least, has barely scratched the surface in blue. It is a bold valuation for a striker coming off an injury-hit campaign, but it underlines how highly the club still rate his upside.

Any club stepping forward knows this is not a bargain-bin raid. It’s a calculated punt on potential.

Forest circle as Awoniyi edges out

One club willing to explore that gamble is Nottingham Forest.

They have entered the race for the former Manchester City youth product and are expected to be busy as the window winds down. With Taiwo Awoniyi poised to join Coventry City, Forest need a new focal point in attack. Delap, with his physical profile and room to grow, fits the brief.

If Forest push hard, they can offer what Como cannot: Premier League football now, and the chance for Delap to prove he belongs at this level after a stuttering first attempt with Chelsea.

The decision, then, is shaping up as a straight choice between status and stage. Champions League minutes in Italy, or the relentless grind of England’s top flight.

A career at a crossroads

Delap’s stock has not collapsed with his Chelsea struggles, largely because of what came before. At Ipswich Town, during their first season back in the top flight, he hit 12 goals and looked every inch a striker on the rise. That campaign still colours how clubs view him: raw, but dangerous; inconsistent, but clearly gifted.

His next move will also echo beyond club football.

Delap has represented England at various youth levels and remains on the radar, but a senior call-up for the Three Lions has yet to arrive. Through his father, Rory Delap, he is also eligible for the Republic of Ireland. The choice of club, the minutes he earns, and the stage he plays on could all shape which national shirt he eventually pulls on.

Alonso’s overhaul gathers momentum

All of this unfolds against a backdrop of sweeping change at Chelsea.

Under new manager Xabi Alonso, the club are ripping up and reshaping the squad. Big decisions are being made quickly. Nicolas Jackson could yet depart for Aston Villa, another sign that no forward is entirely safe as the Blues chase balance and clarity in their attacking options.

In that context, Delap’s exit feels less like a possibility and more like a matter of timing and destination.

The only real question now is where he chooses to rebuild his reputation: by the lakeside in Como with Fabregas and Champions League nights, or in the unforgiving glare of the Premier League, where one good season can change everything.
