Espanyol Faces Real Madrid Without Defensive Leader Cabrera
Espanyol’s preparations for Real Madrid have been hit by a suspension that has arrived at the worst possible moment.
Leandro Cabrera, one of the pillars of their back line, will miss next Saturday’s clash with Los Blancos as he begins serving a three-match ban carried over from last season. The punishment stems from an incident against Getafe, when the Uruguayan defender struck the VAR monitor after the final whistle, an act detailed in the referee’s report and later sanctioned.
The timing of the ban has already caused confusion. Cabrera’s absence from the recent game against Levante raised eyebrows inside and outside the club. His name appeared on the morning team sheet, only for him to be withdrawn from the starting XI just minutes before kick-off, with no mention of any physical problem.
Espanyol pushed the appeal process to the limit, fighting to delay the suspension and keep their experienced centre-back available for these early league fixtures. The effort failed. The decision stood, and Cabrera sat out the Levante match, where Espanyol finally collected their first La Liga win of the season. Unless something extraordinary happens, he will also be unavailable when Real Madrid arrive.
Defensive Adjustments
Manolo’s solution in Valencia was to turn to Riedel alongside Unai Núñez at the heart of the defence. The makeshift pairing held firm, helped by a largely toothless Levante attack that rarely troubled Dmitrovic. It was a clean sheet built on control rather than heroics.
Now comes a very different exam.
Real Madrid bring a frontline led by Kylian Mbappé, a step up in speed, movement and ruthlessness from what Espanyol faced last weekend. Against that kind of firepower, Cabrera’s absence feels heavier. The Uruguayan is not just a starter; he is one of the most seasoned voices in the back four, with a long list of battles against Spain’s elite behind him.
Espanyol proved they can grind out a result without him against modest opposition. The question now is whether that same patchwork defence can hold its nerve when Mbappé and company walk into town.
