Real Madrid's Pre-Season Dominance Under Mourinho
Real Madrid’s pre-season rhythm is starting to sound familiar: early control, clinical finishing, and a manager who sees a team taking shape exactly as he wants it.
On a scorching day that turned the training ground into a furnace, Madrid eased to victory, and José Mourinho walked away talking less about the scoreline and more about the structure being built behind it.
Mbappé Strikes Early, Huijsen Adds Authority
Madrid didn’t wait long to seize control. In the sixth minute, Kylian Mbappé punished a dreadful back pass from Schallenberg, racing through and beating Loris Karius with the kind of composure that already feels routine in white.
The tone was set. Madrid pressed high, moved the ball quickly, and forced mistakes. The second goal underlined that dominance. On 20 minutes, Arda Güler delivered a perfect corner and Dean Huijsen rose to meet it, steering a firm header home to double the lead.
From there, the contest felt largely decided. Madrid dictated tempo, managed space, and played with the calm of a side that knew it had already done the hard part.
Espí Finishes the Job, New Faces Step In
The pressure finally told again just before the hour. Substitute Espí arrived to finish off a sharp move in the 57th minute, converting a precise cross from Carreras to seal the win and underline the depth Mourinho now has at his disposal.
That depth was on show in more subtle ways too. On the hour mark, Marc Cucurella and Ousmane Diomande were both handed their debuts, dropped straight into a side already in control. They didn’t need to transform the game; they just had to slot into a system that is clearly being drilled hard.
Mourinho made sure the minutes were spread with care. Mbappé and Konaté each played 45 minutes, while Jude Bellingham, Cucurella and Diomande were given 30. Nothing random. Nothing left to chance.
“Then, the question of 45 minutes for Mbappe and Konate or the 30 minutes for Bellingham, Cucurella, and Diomande are things that we analyze scientifically with the data we have,” Mourinho told Realmadrid TV. “And with the most important factor, which is the player’s own experience, the knowledge the player has of their own body.”
“Good Players, Very Good Players, and Very, Very, Very Good Players”
If the match showed control, Mourinho’s words afterwards revealed conviction.
“At this moment, it’s difficult to talk individually because we are growing as a team,” he said. “Here, we only have good players, very good players, and very, very, very good players. From the combination of the work of these players, we have to create a very, very good team. That’s what we’re trying to do, and I think we’re taking the right steps to achieve it.”
The message was clear: the focus is on the collective, not on early headlines for star names or summer signings.
He reserved particular praise for the latest arrivals and the way they’ve thrown themselves into an unforgiving workload.
“I’m also very happy with those who arrived last. It’s not easy to jump straight into high-intensity training like what we are doing,” he explained. “It’s not easy for them to have double sessions in the morning and afternoon, because they train in the morning with the group and in the afternoon with the small group that joined now. With incredible heat. The 5 p.m. training session is really tough, and they arrived with a top mentality.”
Double sessions, brutal temperatures, immediate demands. There is no gentle easing-in period here.
A Squad Pushed Hard, and Pointing Forward
Mourinho’s staff are leaning heavily on data, but the coach insists the players’ own understanding of their bodies remains central. The balance, he believes, is right.
“I think we’ve reached this good week, which is the next one, in a very acceptable condition for this moment in the season. Let’s go for it.”
The goals from Mbappé, Huijsen and Espí told one story on the pitch. Mourinho’s words told another: a squad being pushed to its limits now, so it can live with far bigger tests when the real season begins.
