Barcelona Sells Tommy Marques to Braga for €10 Million

Barcelona’s latest midfield reshuffle has claimed a notable victim. Tommy Marques, one of the most talked‑about prospects around the club’s reserve side, is leaving permanently, with Braga striking a deal worth up to €12 million.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has already stamped the move with his familiar “Here we go”, confirming that an agreement is fully in place between the clubs.

Braga beat German interest to land 19-year-old

Braga will pay €10 million up front for the 19-year-old, with a further €2 million tied to achievable add-ons. For a player who has barely tasted first-team football, it is a significant fee – and a clear sign of how highly he is rated.

Marques had other options. Two German clubs came forward with interest, sensing an opportunity as his situation at Barcelona cooled over the summer. He listened, but chose Braga, backing a return to his home country as the right platform for regular senior minutes and a bigger role.

Barcelona, for their part, get a clean, permanent sale rather than another loan or a marginal squad role. A deal that suits everyone, even if it underlines how quickly a pathway can close at the top level.

From Flick’s orbit to the exit door

Only a few months ago, Marques was hovering around Hansi Flick’s squad and being talked up as one of the next in line from the academy and reserve ranks. Officially registered with the reserves, he still trained regularly with the seniors and had already tasted La Liga football.

He made his first-team debut at 18, coming on for six minutes in a 3-0 win over Mallorca at Camp Nou on February 7. A brief outing against Alaves followed. Not much, but enough to suggest he was on the club’s radar and edging closer to a more stable role.

Then the new season drew nearer, and the picture changed.

His pre-season involvement told the story. Marques featured for just 28 minutes in Barcelona’s second match of the Udine triangular tournament, a 1-0 defeat to Udinese. No gradual increase in minutes, no extended audition. Just a short run-out that felt more like a farewell than a springboard.

From that point, an exit stopped being a possibility and started to look like the logical outcome.

Rodri deal shuts the door

At the start of the summer, Marques had reason to believe he could climb the internal ladder. Marc Casado was expected to depart, potentially freeing up a slot in midfield and clearing one of the obstacles between the teenager and a regular senior presence.

Barcelona chose a different route. They pushed ahead for Rodri from Manchester City, a move that instantly raised the bar – and the congestion – in the middle of the pitch.

With one of the world’s top midfielders now set to arrive, competition in that area becomes even more brutal. For a 19-year-old still trying to establish himself, the prospect of meaningful minutes shrank fast.

Faced with that reality, a permanent transfer stopped being a setback and started to look like a career decision. Braga get a young midfielder with La Liga exposure and top-level training behind him. Barcelona bank up to €12 million and clear space in a crowded department.

The question now is not what Marques might have been at Camp Nou, but how quickly he can turn this move into proof that Barcelona have just sold more than a promising squad player.
