Late Transfer Window Chaos: Liverpool, Arsenal, United Moves
The Premier League has kicked off, but the transfer window is refusing to step aside. With just over a week left, the market is still throwing up heavyweights, hard lines and a few wild ideas.
Liverpool’s winger hunt hits resistance
Andoni Iraola has been blunt: Liverpool need wingers. Urgently.
Two bids for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh have already been thrown out, the latest a £60m offer after an initial £50m was dismissed. Brighton are standing firm, and Liverpool’s search for a long-term successor to Mohamed Salah is starting to look like a high-stakes scramble rather than a smooth succession plan.
Curtis Jones’ €30m move to Inter has only sharpened that sense of urgency. The midfielder has signed a five-year deal in Milan, with Liverpool banking a potential extra €5m in add-ons and inserting a 10 per cent sell-on clause. He was into the final year of his Anfield contract and had made it clear to Iraola he wanted out, forcing the club’s hand.
With Jones gone and wide options thin, Liverpool want not just one winger but two. Minteh is the primary target, but Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola sits on the wish list as well. The problem? PSG have set the price at a towering £145m.
So Liverpool are widening the net. The Times reports the club have made an enquiry to Real Madrid about Brazil forward Endrick. The 20-year-old spent last season at Lyon and was part of Brazil’s World Cup squad, but his future under José Mourinho at the Bernabéu is unclear. Liverpool are trying to find the crack in the door.
Arsenal reshape attack after Vinicius blow
Across north London, Arsenal are recalibrating their plans on the left side of attack.
Mikel Arteta had long earmarked Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr as the dream signing, the player to tilt tight games in both the Premier League and Champions League. Vinicius’ decision to stay at the Bernabéu has forced a rethink. Arsenal have now turned their attention to Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz, exploring whether a deal for the 21-year-old Turkey international is possible before the window shuts.
The left flank remains a priority zone. Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi would likely have been the move this summer, but injury has pushed that possibility into January territory.
One deal is already done, though, and it has significantly reshaped Arsenal’s back line. Ezri Konsa has arrived from Aston Villa for £51m, becoming the club’s fifth signing of the summer.
“I know he loves defenders who can really defend and defenders who are calm on the ball. His style suits me so I can't wait to get going,” Konsa said as he was unveiled, speaking about Arteta’s demands. He called it “a proud moment” for him and his family and made his intentions plain: “I'm here to win. I'll do everything in my power to continue bringing success to this club.”
Konsa could make his debut against his former club as early as next week. Arsenal’s rebuild is not subtle; it is designed for a title charge on two fronts.
And there is still room for audacity. Reports from Footmercato suggest Arsenal are considering Victor Osimhen, now at Galatasaray, as a potential option if his wage demands drop. With Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Jesus already in the squad, it would be a blockbuster move rather than a necessity, but the long-standing Premier League links to the former Napoli striker refuse to die down.
United close in on Baleba
Manchester United start their Premier League season against Hull at lunchtime with a major piece of business close to the line.
The club have agreed a deal worth £70m with Brighton for midfielder Carlos Baleba, bringing to an end a pursuit that began last summer. Baleba is set to undergo a medical this weekend, with Sky Sports reporting a five-year contract is on the table and a sell-on clause included for Brighton.
For Michael Carrick, it’s a double boost: a season opener and, if all goes to plan, a key midfield signing finally secured.
Spurs, City and the striker carousel
Tottenham are not sitting still either. They have agreed a deal with Manchester City to sign winger Savinho for an initial £75m, a move that could be followed by the arrival of Omar Marmoush. The Brazilian’s switch forces City into their own search, with the champions identifying Brazilian winger Allan as a possible replacement.
At Chelsea, the focus is on outgoings and one big name in particular. Enzo Fernandez was booed on his return to Stamford Bridge after a turbulent summer that ended in a red card and World Cup final heartbreak. He has previously indicated he would be open to leaving, and new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is a keen admirer of his former midfielder.
Chelsea, though, had set a firm deadline of 5pm on Friday 14 August for bids. That cut-off has passed, and the club now expect Fernandez to stay. Xabi Alonso has publicly praised the Argentine’s attitude in training ahead of the new season, but City could yet test Chelsea’s resolve if they come close to the £120m valuation before the window shuts.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, are preparing their own attacking play. Chelsea are braced for a bid for Nicolas Jackson, with the Telegraph reporting Unai Emery could move with an offer close to the £65m asking price. The 25-year-old comes off a lively World Cup after a disappointing loan at Bayern Munich. Atletico Madrid, put off by the price, have stepped back, even while valuing Julian Alvarez at £150m as Barcelona and Arsenal monitor his situation.
Window running hot
Names like Bradley Barcola, Alvarez and others still loom large over the final days of the window. Barcelona’s capture of Rodri and headline deals for Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson and Bruno Guimaraes have already set a frantic tone across Europe.
But the market is far from finished. Liverpool still need width. Arsenal still want a left-sided match-winner. United are about to drop big money into their midfield. Spurs and City are reshaping their forward lines.
The clock is ticking. The chequebooks clearly aren’t closed. Who blinks first?
