Manchester United Set to Debut Tielemans and Santos Against Hull
Manchester United’s new midfield era is set to begin in earnest at the MKM Stadium this afternoon, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos both in line for competitive debuts against Hull.
Santos, a £50million summer arrival from Chelsea, has already felt like part of the furniture. The Brazilian featured in all six of United’s pre-season friendlies and rarely looked off the pace, a workload that strongly points to him starting at the heart of Michael Carrick’s midfield in the Premier League curtain-raiser.
Tielemans has taken a different route to the same stage. The Belgian joined later after a post-World Cup break following his country’s run to the quarter-finals, but any lingering rust appears gone. He completed 90 minutes in the 4-2 defeat to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Poland, a significant marker of his readiness rather than a concern about the result.
Carrick, gearing up for his first full campaign as permanent United head coach, could lean on continuity in the middle of the pitch. That would mean retaining the same trio that started against Milan: Santos and Tielemans in deeper roles, with captain Bruno Fernandes operating where he thrives most, in the No10 pocket, stitching attacks together.
Defensive Considerations
At the back, the picture is less settled.
Lisandro Martinez’s lack of match sharpness leaves Carrick with a bold decision to make at centre-back. Youngster Ayden Heaven is pushing hard and could be trusted to start alongside Harry Maguire, potentially edging out Leny Yoro for the spot against one of Maguire’s former clubs. It would be a big call, but Carrick has not shied away from backing youth before.
Some positions are locked in. Senne Lammens is expected to start in goal, while Luke Shaw should take his familiar place at left-back. On the opposite flank, though, there is a straight shootout between Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui for the right-back berth, with both offering different profiles in and out of possession.
Attacking Options
Further forward, Patrick Dorgu has quietly become one of Carrick’s most intriguing options. Once a more defensive-minded player, he has been reshaped into a left winger, his transformation accelerated around a cruel injury suffered in January against Arsenal. His resurgence on that flank now collides with another key piece of the puzzle: Matheus Cunha.
Cunha does his best work cutting in from the left, where his movement and link play can unpick defensive lines. That overlap with Dorgu creates a genuine selection dilemma. Under normal circumstances, Carrick might simply shift Cunha elsewhere, but the situation up front complicates everything.
Benjamin Sesko is not yet ready to start after a three-month injury lay-off, leaving United short of an obvious centre-forward to lead the line from the first whistle. That opens the door for Cunha to deputise through the middle again, a role he has already filled with diligence. If that happens, the dominoes fall neatly: Dorgu can hold the left, while Bryan Mbeumo is freed to move back out to the right, where his direct running and end product can trouble Hull’s full-backs.
New signings, a reshaped attack, and a coach entering his first full season in charge. For United, this is more than just an opening day. It’s an early glimpse of what Carrick wants this team to become.
