Roy Keane's Warning on Manchester United's Defence Ahead of New Season
Roy Keane has welcomed Manchester United’s shift in transfer strategy under Michael Carrick – but the club legend still sees one glaring problem as the new Premier League season looms: the defence.
United have rebuilt the heart of their midfield after a turbulent summer. Casemiro has left on a free, Manuel Ugarte is sidelined with a serious World Cup injury, and the club has moved quickly to plug the gaps. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos are already through the door, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba close to following in a deal worth £65million plus £5m in add-ons.
On the face of it, that’s decisive business. Keane agrees. Up to a point.
Speaking on the latest Stick to Football podcast, the former United captain praised the club for finally targeting players who know the division and don’t come with eye-watering, headline-grabbing fees.
“We have to give United credit for a little bit,” he said. “The recent recruitment, they have come back to players who know the Premier League. That’s been a big one. It’s obviously the same mindset this year, bringing players in who are maybe under the radar, not your huge money, but again, some of Man United’s greatest signings going back over the last 20 or 30 years have been players under the radar.
“It’s not always necessarily about spending £100m on somebody. I think these players will be good for Man United, but being good and trying to win a league title... I think that defence is the big problem.”
That last line hangs over Carrick’s preparations. United have refreshed the middle of the pitch, but Keane’s concern is that the foundation behind it still doesn’t look ready to carry a title challenge.
Keane also backed the club’s decision to walk away from several high-profile pursuits. Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali both ended up at Tottenham Hotspur, while Elliot Anderson joined Manchester City after United stepped aside as the fees climbed.
“I think the rumours are that they were told that the fees were going to keep going up and at some stage you have to back away, don’t you?” Keane said.
He pointed to a pattern that has scarred United’s recent history in the market.
“You look at their other signings though, seem United seem to be in that bracket of buying lads for £50, 60m. They obviously had their fingers burned over the last few years, but again they were buying players who weren’t used to the Premier League.”
This time, the approach looks more restrained, more targeted. Tielemans brings proven Premier League experience. Santos and the imminent arrival of Baleba add energy and depth to a midfield that suddenly looks more balanced than it did at the end of last season.
Yet the question Keane keeps circling back to refuses to go away: can this back line sustain a title push?
United still have time to answer it. The transfer window remains open until 11pm on September 1, leaving room for Carrick and the club’s recruitment team to make at least one more decisive move if they choose.
For now, the focus turns to the opening day. Carrick’s men start their campaign away at newly-promoted Hull City on Saturday at 12:30pm, carrying fresh legs in midfield, a new-look engine room – and the weight of their former captain’s warning about what lies behind it.
