Yael Trepy's Remarkable Recovery After Pool Accident

Cagliari’s young forward Yael Trepy has walked out of hospital with his career – and his life – back on track, two weeks after a terrifying pool accident in Sardinia left him fighting for survival.

The French striker was discharged from the "Santissima Annunziata" University Hospital in Sassari in good condition, closing the most dangerous chapter of an ordeal that began on 16 August in a villa in Baja Sardinia, near the Costa Smeralda.

A holiday that should have been routine almost turned fatal. Trepy nearly drowned in a swimming pool, and only the speed of the emergency response prevented disaster. Rescue teams airlifted him to hospital, where doctors immediately moved him into intensive care and placed him in a medically induced coma for 48 hours.

From there, the story slowly began to turn.

Once he woke, Trepy started a cautious but steady recovery. He was transferred to the pulmonology ward, where tests confirmed what everyone around Cagliari had been desperate to hear: no major physical damage, no lasting injuries that would automatically end a promising career before it had truly begun.

“Not a miracle, but a system that worked”

The medical team in Sassari chose their words carefully, but the relief was obvious.

Professor Pietro Pirina, director of the department of clinical and interventional pulmonology at the hospital, summed up the outcome in a statement to "Sky Sport": “The patient is leaving hospital in a generally good clinical condition, after a course of treatment that showed a gradual and marked recovery.”

He underlined that the progress was consistent and measurable: “The tests carried out during his stay in hospital showed an improvement in his condition, which allowed us to plan his discharge from hospital with peace of mind. If some have spoken in recent days of a miracle, we prefer to speak of the work of a system that has proven its effectiveness.”

From the first emergency call in Baja Sardinia to the helicopter transfer and the intensive care unit in Sassari, every link in that system held. The result is a 19-year-old footballer walking out of hospital instead of being remembered in tragedy.

Smile, farewell, and the road ahead

Trepy left the hospital doors with a broad smile, accompanied by his mother. Before stepping outside, he took time to say goodbye to the medical staff, as well as the general director and the medical director of the hospital – the people who had watched over every stage of his recovery.

The next stop is Arco, in the province of Trento. There, a structured rehabilitation programme awaits, designed to rebuild his strength and monitor every response of his body after such a severe shock.

Only after that phase will doctors run detailed tests to decide the crucial question: can he safely return to competition and regain full fitness clearance?

For now, Cagliari and their supporters know one thing for certain. A player they feared they had lost is back on his feet. The rest of the story will be written in Arco, and then, perhaps, back on the pitch.
