Yael Trepy in Intensive Care After Swimming Pool Incident

Yael Trepy, the 20-year-old French forward of Serie A side Cagliari, is in intensive care in Sassari after a serious incident in a swimming pool, the Italian club has confirmed.

Cagliari announced that Trepy “is currently in intensive care at the hospital in Sassari,” stressing that the club is “in close contact with the medical staff and the player’s family”. The Sardinian side also issued a clear request as concern spread across Italy and France: respect the family’s space.

The club asks for privacy to be respected and will provide further updates as soon as possible.

Italian media reports say Trepy was rescued on Sunday in Porto Cervo, in northern Sardinia, after swallowing a large quantity of water in a swimming pool. Doctors then placed him in a medically induced coma, according to those reports.

The news lands just days after Trepy’s last appearance for Cagliari. On Friday he started in the Coppa Italia, playing 54 minutes in a 1-0 win over Arezzo, another small step in what had looked like a steadily rising career.

Trepy joined Cagliari’s academy in 2022 from Paris-based Union Sportive Creteil and broke into the first team last season, scoring once in eight Serie A appearances. A young attacker with pace and promise, he had begun to carve out a role on the Sardinian club’s frontline.

Now his season, and perhaps far more than that, hangs on the updates Cagliari have promised to deliver when doctors are ready to speak.
