Xabi Alonso Rules Out Moises Caicedo for Carabao Cup Tie Against Leeds
Xabi Alonso has ruled Moises Caicedo out of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds, insisting he will not gamble on the midfielder’s fitness again.
Caicedo, who missed the opening two league games against Fulham and Luton, made his return as a substitute in the chaotic 4-3 win over Brighton. His comeback barely lasted a quarter of an hour. After just 14 minutes on the pitch, the Ecuador captain signalled he was struggling and came off, a sharp jolt to Chelsea’s early-season plans.
He sat out Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, and Alonso admitted at the Emirates that Chelsea had pushed him back too quickly for the Brighton game, vowing not to repeat “the same mistake again”.
The Chelsea head coach has stuck to that stance. Speaking on Tuesday afternoon ahead of Wednesday night’s home tie with Leeds, Alonso was blunt when asked if Caicedo was fit.
No. Not yet. Still not ready to go. Not the moment to take a too-early risk. We go game by game with them. It’s too early.
The message was clear: no shortcuts this time.
There is, though, a sliver of optimism for the week ahead. When pressed on whether Caicedo could return in time to face Hull, Alonso allowed a small opening.
Potentially, yes. But we need to wait and probably Thursday or Friday we will know more.
Chelsea will at least have Levi Colwill available, while Marco Palestra remains sidelined. Alonso underlined how big a blow that has been inside the camp.
Especially for (Palestra). He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the PL. He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.
Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha are also out of the Leeds clash, trimming Chelsea’s options further as Alonso juggles his squad in the early weeks of the season.
Leeds, by contrast, arrive at Stamford Bridge with far fewer concerns. They have close to a clean bill of health, with only Daniel James facing a late fitness test as he battles nagging back and hamstring issues.
Chelsea go into the tie nursing bodies and bruises. Leeds arrive almost full strength. In a cup week that already feels important, Alonso has made his choice: no risks with Caicedo now, in the hope of having him fully firing when the fixtures start to bite even harder.
