Wales Faces Portugal in Nations League A: Tactical Dilemmas Ahead

Wales will walk into Lisbon on Thursday night with no easing-in period, no gentle start. Their Nations League A campaign opens against Portugal, against Cristiano Ronaldo, under the lights and under pressure.

Craig Bellamy’s first major selection calls as head coach are already complicated. Harry Wilson is out. Nathan Broadhead is out. Karl Darlow is out. All three have withdrawn with injuries, stripping experience and depth from a squad that can’t afford many absences at this level.

The problems don’t stop there. Highly rated young defender Dylan Lawlor is also missing, a blow to the long-term defensive plan as much as the immediate one. Bellamy, though, does get one major boost: captain Ben Davies is back. His return restores authority to the back line and offers tactical flexibility, whether Wales go with a back three or a more traditional four.

Up front, the picture is less settled but more intriguing. Uncapped forwards Cian Ashford and Joe Taylor are in the frame, live options rather than token call-ups. Both bring energy, movement and a touch of unpredictability – qualities that can unsettle even seasoned defences if used boldly and at the right moments.

So the question hangs over this trip to Lisbon: how brave does Bellamy go? Does he lean on structure and experience to contain Ronaldo and the rest, or does he throw in fresh legs and raw ambition to try and punch back?

The tactical board is wide open. Pick a shape that can survive long spells without the ball, yet still carry a threat on the break. Decide where Davies anchors the defence. Work out whether Ashford or Taylor – or both – get the nod to chase lost causes and turn them into chances.

If you were in Bellamy’s shoes, what would it look like? Which formation stands up to Portugal’s firepower, and which XI do you trust to walk into Lisbon and come out with a statement result against Ronaldo and company?
