Wales Faces Portugal in Nations League Opener

Wales head to Lisbon on Thursday, 24 September to open their Nations League A campaign against Portugal, and they do it with a squad already patched together before a ball has been kicked.

Craig Bellamy’s first big test comes without three players he would rather not be missing. Harry Wilson, Nathan Broadhead and goalkeeper Karl Darlow have all withdrawn through injury, stripping Wales of creativity, depth in attack and experience between the posts just as they prepare to face Cristiano Ronaldo and a Portugal side that rarely show mercy at home.

There is another setback at the back. Highly rated young defender Dylan Lawlor is also unavailable, denying Bellamy a chance to blood one of Wales’ most promising prospects on a major stage. The defensive reshuffle will have to wait.

One key figure does return. Captain Ben Davies is fit and back in the frame, a significant boost for a back line that will have to read the game perfectly against Portugal’s movement and relentlessness in wide areas. His presence alone settles the picture, offering leadership, organisation and a calm head in what is likely to be a hostile Lisbon night.

Up front, Bellamy has fresh options rather than familiar faces. Uncapped forwards Cian Ashford and Joe Taylor are both pushing to be involved, each offering energy and a point to prove. Throwing them in from the start in such a high-profile opener would be bold, but not out of character for a coach who has never been shy of a challenge.

So the question hangs over this fixture as much as the opposition do: with injuries biting and Ronaldo waiting, what shape should Wales take? Which formation makes sense in Lisbon? Who starts, who sits, and who gets the chance to turn a difficult night on paper into a statement result?

If you were in Bellamy’s shoes, how would you line them up to take on Cristiano Ronaldo and company – and would you trust new blood to seize the moment?
