Villarreal vs Real Betis: Pressure on Perez as Betis Aim for Third Straight Win

Real Betis arrive at Estadio de la Ceramica on Monday chasing a third straight win in all competitions and the feel of a team riding a wave. Villarreal, by contrast, are still trying to find their feet under Inigo Perez, who is hunting for his first victory since taking over in the summer.

Perez under pressure, run without a win

Perez came in with his stock high after his work at Rayo Vallecano, where he steered the club to eighth in La Liga in 2024-25 and then took them all the way to a Conference League final. That reputation bought him time. The results so far are testing it.

The schedule offers no mercy either. Betis on Monday, Malaga and Levante to follow before a three-week international break. Perez needs a result from this stretch, and fast.

He does at least have history on his side in this particular fixture. Across five previous managerial meetings with Betis, he has never lost, with one win and four draws. It is a thin cushion, but right now he will cling to anything that suggests a turning point.

Betis flying after statement wins

While Villarreal search for a spark, Betis arrive with theirs crackling.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have taken four wins from their first five competitive games of the 2026-27 season, including a 1-0 victory over Real Madrid that sent a jolt through the league. That result alone would have fuelled belief. What followed in Europe pushed it further.

Back in the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2005-06, Betis went to Lille and came through a wild 3-2 contest. Marc Bartra, more commonly the anchor at the back, turned unlikely hero with a brace as Betis came from behind twice. Each time Lille struck, Betis hit back.

Then came Troy Parrott. The forward, who had already scored the winner against Real Madrid, marked his Champions League debut with another decisive goal, this time the strike that finally killed off Lille. Two big games, two winners from the same boot. Confidence like that can change a season.

Betis return to domestic duty sitting fifth in La Liga, just three points behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. They are not just collecting points; they are building a sense of momentum.

Their recent record against Villarreal only adds to that. Last season they took four points from the two league meetings, including a dramatic draw at La Ceramica when Antony hit a brace to drag Betis back from 2-0 down. That comeback extended Betis’s unbeaten run in league visits to Villarreal to four matches (two wins, two draws) since a 2-0 defeat there in October 2021.

They know this ground. They know how to get out of it with something.

Team news: changes coming for Villarreal, Betis boosted

Villarreal are expected to be without Carlos Romero, while Juan Foyth is also unlikely to feature after missing the last two matches through injury.

There will be a significant change in goal. Peter Gulacsi, who came in for Luiz Junior in the narrow defeat to Borussia Dortmund, is set to make his La Liga debut between the posts.

Perez is likely to rotate with the games piling up. Alex Freeman, Nicolas Pepe, Alberto Moleiro, Ayoze Perez and Gerard Moreno are all pushing to start and could give the side a different edge in attack and in the half-spaces.
