Villarreal's Season Trouble Deepens After Another Defeat

Villarreal’s season slipped deeper into trouble on Monday night, and this time it hurt far more than the scoreline.

At the Estadio de la Ceramica, Gerard Moreno had done what he so often does, striking after 29 minutes to give the hosts control in this La Liga matchday five clash. Villarreal were on top, the script unfolding just as head coach Perez had drawn it up.

Then the familiar collapse.

Two rapid punches from Cucho Hernandez and Natan flipped the game before the break, turning a comfortable 1-0 lead into a 2-1 deficit and exposing once again the fragility running through this Villarreal side. The scoreboard didn’t change again, but the damage ran far deeper than a third league defeat.

That loss leaves Villarreal marooned in 18th place with just two points from five games. Ten goals conceded in that stretch matches the club’s worst defensive start to a season, a bleak benchmark first set in 2023-24, as reported by Marca. Old problems have resurfaced with alarming speed.

Perez did not hide from any of it.

“Up until Betis scored, the game was unfolding exactly as we had imagined,” he reflected after the final whistle, still processing how his team had unravelled so quickly. “The moment we conceded, the same thing happened to us as against Depor.”

The pattern is becoming a theme: one setback, then a spiral. Villarreal lost their shape, their composure and, crucially, their belief.

“The second half was damaging for the team and for me as a coach,” Perez admitted. “It affects our confidence and self-belief. Recovering from defeat is never easy, but it's even harder when you come away with these feelings. Nevertheless, we have no option but to move forward.”

The Navarrese coach spoke with the weight of the stands on his shoulders. He knows the expectations at Villarreal. He also knows that patience, in a relegation place with numbers this poor, is not infinite.

He called for immediate, deep tactical analysis to halt the slide and to meet the standards demanded by the club’s supporters. No excuses, no sugar-coating.

“We're not managing to give our supporters what we want to give them and what they deserve,” he said. “We won't sleep well tonight. We're extremely disappointed. Tomorrow we have to regain our enthusiasm, analyse the game and work on improving so that we can find the level we're looking for.”

There is, in his words, a conviction that the idea is right, even if the execution is not.

“Our idea is clear and we've shown it in phases during several matches,” he continued, “but I need to analyse everything very carefully to see what we must change in order to overcome this difficult spell.”

Phases are no longer enough. Villarreal have reached the point where “moments” and “spells” must turn into full performances, or a season that has barely begun will start to feel dangerously defined.
