Tuchel's England Plans Disrupted by Key Withdrawals
Tuchel’s first serious crack at the Nations League has been hit hard before a ball is kicked. Five players out. Key ones, too.
Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Tino Livramento have all withdrawn from the England squad, ripping sizeable holes in the spine of Tuchel’s early blueprint.
In their place, the England manager has turned to a mix of promise and familiarity: Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White have been called up and will join the camp on Tuesday.
Spine ripped out
This isn’t just a few fringe names dropping away. Rice is Tuchel’s midfield anchor, Palmer the creative spark who was only just welcomed back into the fold. Mainoo has been one of Manchester United’s few bright spots. Rashford, when fit and confident, remains a weapon at this level. Livramento offers flexibility and energy at full-back.
All gone in one sweep.
Palmer’s absence is the most eye-catching. The Chelsea forward had fought his way back after missing out on the 2026 World Cup squad and was expected to be central to Tuchel’s attacking plans. After featuring in Chelsea’s heavy defeat to Brentford, he has stepped back with what is understood to be a minor issue, tied to load management. Club and country have agreed not to push a 24-year-old who has already carried a huge burden this season.
At Manchester United, the problems are piling up. Mainoo and Rashford both limped out of the 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage. Mainoo lasted 80 minutes before coming off; Rashford also departed with physical complaints. Neither will be risked as Tuchel shapes his first Nations League campaign.
Livramento’s withdrawal completes a list that leaves Tuchel short of options in defence and light in experience higher up the pitch.
Door opens for Gibbs-White and Garner
Injuries hurt managers. They also hand opportunities to others.
Gibbs-White’s recall comes quickly after the disappointment of missing the initial 27-man squad. The Forest captain was on the brink of inclusion then; Tuchel admitted on Friday that the 26-year-old was “close” to making the original cut, pointing to his consistent Premier League form as a major factor.
Now he has his opening.
Already capped six times, Gibbs-White returns as a player trusted by the staff and battle-hardened by a season spent dragging Forest through difficult spells. He arrives not as a token replacement, but as someone who was already in the conversation.
Garner, too, steps back into the senior setup. The Everton midfielder made his first two England appearances in March and impressed enough to stay firmly on the radar, even though he did not travel to the 2026 World Cup. This call-up is another chance to convince a new manager he belongs in the long-term picture.
Both players will know the stakes. With Rice and Palmer missing, and Mainoo out, there is room for someone to grab a permanent role in Tuchel’s evolving system.
Brutal timing before Spain test
The calendar has not been kind.
England open their Nations League A campaign against Spain on 26 September, a meeting with the world champions that will immediately expose any fault lines in Tuchel’s plan. It is exactly the sort of game where a coach wants his strongest XI, his clearest structure, his sharpest weapons.
Instead, Tuchel must improvise.
After Spain, England face a double-header against the Czech Republic before a testing away trip to Croatia. It is a run that will quickly define the mood around this new era: bedding in ideas while trying to get results against hardened European opposition.
The withdrawals strip away some of the comfort of familiarity. But they also fast-track a different question: can Garner and Gibbs-White turn an injury crisis into the moment their international careers truly ignite?
