Tottenham's Quiet International Break: Key Players Stay Home
Tottenham’s international picture looks strangely quiet this break — and that might suit them just fine.
Only two senior Spurs players have been called up so far, both heading to the same camp. Dutch boss Xavi Hernandez has selected central defenders Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke for the Netherlands, a double nod to the growing influence of Tottenham’s back line.
That’s the extent of the senior call-ups for now. For a club usually scattered across continents during international windows, it’s a noticeably short list.
Porro ruled out, Kudus stays home by choice
Two other key names won’t be going anywhere.
Pedro Porro has been withdrawn from Spain’s squad after the hamstring issue he picked up in Tottenham’s 2-3 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday. The injury looked worrying the moment he pulled up, and Spain have now formally stood him down.
That one’s straightforward. Kudus is not.
According to Alasdair Gold of Football.London, Mohammed Kudus has voluntarily removed himself from Ghana duty to continue his recovery and build fitness in London. No pressure from the club, no last-minute wrangle — just a player deciding to stay put.
Kudus hasn’t started a match since before his injury last season. He’s been eased back in with cameos, each one a little sharper than the last. Saturday felt like a turning point: an assist on the board, another ruled out for offside, and the clearest glimpse yet of what he can bring when fully fit.
AFCON qualifiers are no small stage, but Kudus has chosen three weeks at Hotspur Way over a starring role with Ghana. For Tottenham, that’s a statement. It underlines his intent to nail down a place under the manager rather than chase rhythm on international duty.
Academy rewards as England come calling
While the senior squad enjoys a quieter window, two young Spurs prospects are on the move.
Defender Malachi Hardy and attacker Luca Williams-Barnett have both been called up to England U19, the latest step in their steady climb through the national youth ranks. They’ve been in the England system before, but this is their first taste of U19 level.
Hardy impressed heavily in pre-season, racking up minutes and catching the eye with mature performances against senior opposition. Williams-Barnett, one of the standout talents in the academy, has already been training with the first team, even if he’s yet to make a Premier League bench.
For Tottenham, it paints an intriguing picture: a first team largely staying home to heal and sharpen up, and a new generation heading out to test themselves in national colours.
Fewer air miles. More time on the training pitch. And two teenagers carrying the badge for England. For a club trying to build something lasting, that’s not the worst way to enter an international break.
