Tottenham's Crisis Deepens After Aston Villa Defeat

Tottenham’s season is only five games old, but the alarm bells are already deafening in north London.

A 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday left Spurs marooned in the Premier League relegation zone, still searching for their first league win of the campaign. The scoreline flattered them. The pattern did not.

They started well. They always do.

Spurs dominated the opening stages, moved the ball with purpose and carved out clear chances. For half an hour, maybe a little more, they looked like a side intent on shaking off a bleak August and September.

Then came the now-familiar drop. The control vanished, the composure went with it, and Villa walked through the cracks.

By full-time, the boos were loud, the tension thick, and Roberto De Zerbi’s patience had snapped.

“I’ve never seen one team like us”

Speaking to talkSPORT after the game, De Zerbi didn’t bother to sugarcoat anything. The Italian has built his reputation on sharp ideas and sharp words. Both were on display.

"It's difficult to explain because, in my career, 14 years as a coach, I've never seen one team like us," he said, the disbelief obvious. "So fragile, so inconsistent. You're good, or you're bad. You can't be very good in the first 30, 40 minutes, and then concede like this in this way. It's tough to accept for me."

Spurs had chances to seize control before Villa struck. They didn’t take them. Once again, the punishment was ruthless.

De Zerbi was asked what triggered the collapse this time. He could only shrug verbally.

"Listen, I'm a coach, but I do not have all the answers...for your question, I have no answer," he admitted. There was no tactical alibi, no talk of bad luck or refereeing calls. Just a manager staring at a group he doesn’t yet trust over 90 minutes.

"I can say what I think, what I've seen today and I saw my team in the first half play very well, we had chances to score. We didn't score and then we conceded the first goal...we have to stay closer and stay stronger, more compact."

The message was simple: when the first punch lands, Spurs fold.

The second half briefly offered a flicker of resistance. After Kudus’ goal, Tottenham had a platform again, a jolt of energy and belief. The stadium stirred. Villa looked momentarily rattled.

That surge didn’t last.

"In the second half, after Kudus' goal, I don't know if the players lost energy...now we have to explain another defeat," De Zerbi said.

That line cut through everything. Another defeat. Same story. Same questions.

Spurs’ problem is no longer just about tactics or missed chances. It’s about what happens in their heads when momentum shifts. Every time an opponent claws their way back into a game, Tottenham seem to lose themselves.

Leaders missing when it matters most

For De Zerbi, the recurring theme is as clear as the league table is damning. This isn’t only about shape or pressing triggers. It’s about voices, authority, responsibility.

"Maybe the communication between the players [is the problem], maybe the leaders have to be stronger," he said. "We need leaders to drive and lead the team. With Newcastle it was the same, in Liverpool it was the same, with Everton it was the same... we have to find the solutions."

The list of collapses is already too long for late September. Strong starts, then the floor gives way. Different opponents, same outcome.

Tottenham were supposed to kick on after De Zerbi steered them to safety last season, stabilising a club that had flirted with real trouble. Instead, his second year has veered sharply off course, and the cracks he tried to paper over are now gaping.

Urgent talks with the squad are coming. The mentality will be questioned, the hierarchy inside the dressing room scrutinised, the idea of who actually leads this team pushed to the forefront.

Spurs can’t afford many more games like this. The question now is brutal and unavoidable: does this group have the backbone to respond, or is this fragile, inconsistent version of Tottenham exactly who they are?
