Tottenham Dominates Charlton 5-1 as Savio Shines on Debut

Tottenham Hotspur shook off their Premier League frustration in ruthless style, dismantling Charlton Athletic 5-1 to book their place in the next round and hand Roberto De Zerbi exactly the response he demanded.

Charlton’s night began to unravel almost immediately. Within the first 15 minutes, defenders Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio were both forced off injured, ripping the spine out of the visitors’ back line and leaving them scrambling for solutions they never truly found.

From there, Spurs dominated. They moved the ball with confidence, pinned Charlton back and played the game almost entirely in the visitors’ half, the Championship side reduced to chasing shadows and clinging on.

Savio’s dream introduction

If the scoreline already flattered Tottenham, the final 20 minutes turned the night into a showcase.

On came Savio in the 71st minute, and the debutant wasted no time announcing himself. Eleven minutes after stepping onto the pitch, he cut inside from the flank, opened up his body and drilled a low, precise finish into the bottom corner to make it four. One touch, one idea, one ruthless execution.

He wasn’t done.

Three minutes later, Savio twisted and turned inside the penalty area, his footwork tying Charlton defenders in knots. His scruffy effort took a deflection off Ben Davies and looped in for Tottenham’s fifth. It was messy, it was fortunate, but it was a product of relentless intent from a winger determined to make an impact.

Charlton finally found something to cling to in the 87th minute. From a late corner, defender Lloyd Jones rose well and powered in a header to pull one back, denying Spurs the clean sheet but doing little to alter the story of the night.

By then, the damage was long done. For De Zerbi, the emphatic win and the swagger that came with it offered a timely boost after a disjointed start to the domestic campaign. For the home crowd, Savio’s electric cameo felt like a glimpse of what this Tottenham side might yet become if it clicks.

Everton and Newcastle also progress

Elsewhere, Everton enjoyed a stress-free evening at Deepdale, cruising to a 4-0 victory over Preston North End. Thierno Barry stole the show with a superb hat-trick, while Brennan Johnson added his first goal for the club to round off a dominant performance.

With the game effectively sealed, David Moyes used the comfortable margin to withdraw several key players, protecting legs and minutes with bigger tests ahead.

At St James’ Park, Newcastle United were pushed far harder but still found a way, edging a gripping contest 3-2 against West Bromwich Albion. Bazoumana Toure struck, and Harvey Barnes delivered a decisive double to outgun the visitors.

West Brom stayed in the fight through an Isaac Price free-kick and a late penalty that set up a tense finish. Newcastle’s narrow lead almost vanished from another set piece, but goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen produced a crucial diving save from a Jayson Molumby free-kick to lock in the win.
