Tottenham vs Charlton: Spurs Aim to Bounce Back After Opening Loss
Tottenham Hotspur return to the pitch on Wednesday night with something close to a bruise on their identity. A 3-0 hammering in their Premier League opener has left Roberto De Zerbi’s new project looking raw, expensive and, for now, unconvincing.
This Carabao Cup tie against Charlton Athletic is no gentle run-out. It is a test of character.
Spurs seeking a response, not just a result
The numbers around Tottenham’s summer tell one story: more than £350 million spent, a squad rebuilt, optimism swirling around north London.
The football at Brentford told another. Spurs were flat. Disconnected. Toothless in attack. De Zerbi did not sugar-coat it afterwards, admitting that his expensively assembled group is not yet a team.
The Carabao Cup arrives as an early chance to change the mood. De Zerbi is expected to rotate, but not to experiment recklessly. He knows another limp performance would deepen the doubts that surfaced on Saturday.
Tottenham have history on their side. They have won their last five meetings with Charlton, racking up a 16-4 aggregate score in the process. Those numbers will mean nothing, though, if Spurs play with the same lethargy that marked their league opener.
They need tempo. They need edge. Above all, they need belief before they head back into Premier League action at the weekend.
Charlton arrive with momentum
Charlton do not come to north London as obliging visitors.
The Addicks have started the Championship season with back-to-back wins, then brushed past Cheltenham Town in the first round of this competition. Confidence is intact, the rhythm of competitive football already flowing through their squad.
They have already shown they can punish sides who take them lightly. De Zerbi, still learning the contours of English cup football, cannot afford to let his players stroll into this as if the badge alone will carry them through.
Cup nights have a habit of exposing complacency. Charlton will be ready to pounce if Spurs leave the door even slightly ajar.
Team news: spotlight on Savio and a patched-up attack
All eyes at Tottenham will be on Savio. The £85 million signing is now fully registered and eligible to make his debut. Whether he walks straight into the starting XI or is held back for a cameo, De Zerbi is keeping to himself.
The temptation to unleash him is clear. Spurs are short of attacking weapons.
James Maddison, the side’s primary creator, is out for around two weeks after suffering a small shoulder fracture at the weekend. Mohammed Kudus remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from a thigh injury. Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons are still long-term absentees.
That is a lot of craft and cutting edge stripped from one squad.
There is some relief at the back. Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro will be included in a matchday squad for the first time this season, though both are expected to start on the bench as they build fitness.
Up front, Dominic Solanke is ready to lead the line from the start after making his return from injury as a substitute in the last game. His presence gives Spurs a focal point they badly lacked at times against Brentford.
Archie Gray could keep his place at right-back, rewarded for his early-season involvement, while Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur are pushing to start in midfield. Mateus Fernandes, another of the big-money additions, is also in contention and will be under scrutiny if selected.
On the fringes, Luca Williams-Barnett is expected to take a seat among the substitutes after catching the eye in pre-season. This is the kind of night that can fast-track a young player’s reputation.
Tottenham are bruised, short on attackers and still searching for chemistry. Charlton are confident, sharp and under no pressure.
For De Zerbi and his reshaped squad, this is more than a second-round tie. It is an early verdict on whether this rebuild has the resilience to match its price tag.
