Thomas Tuchel’s England Plans Face Early Challenges
Thomas Tuchel’s England plans are creaking before a ball has even been kicked.
The squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games is barely dry on the page and already the withdrawals are stacking up, with several of his headline names in danger of missing the international window.
England, fresh from that wild 6-4 win over France in the third-place play-off at the last World Cup, are set to face Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic in a demanding stretch over the coming weeks. Tuchel wanted continuity. Instead, he may be forced back to the drawing board.
Cole Palmer’s return was supposed to be one of the feel-good stories of this camp. Left out of the World Cup, the Chelsea playmaker had finally earned his way back into the fold on the back of a superb club season. Now, he might not kick a ball for his country this time either.
According to French outlet Foot Mercato, citing The Athletic, Palmer is expected to withdraw from the squad. The England staff are keen to manage his minutes, wary of overloading him with fixtures in such a compressed period. It is a precaution, but one that could strip Tuchel of one of his most inventive attacking options.
And the concerns do not stop there.
Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also doubts for the internationals. Both had been pencilled in for important roles across this Nations League run, but their availability is now in question, adding more uncertainty to an already unsettled camp.
The timing could hardly be worse. With high-calibre opposition on the horizon and little room for experimentation, Tuchel may have to reshape his plans on the fly, potentially making late call-ups and tactical tweaks to cover the gaps.
What was meant to be a statement window for this new-look England side is turning into an early test of depth, resilience and improvisation.
