TCU Women’s Soccer Falls 1-0 to Texas in Eric Bell’s 300th Match

FORT WORTH – A milestone night for Eric Bell ended with a gut punch for TCU.

In his 300th match in charge of the Horned Frogs, the 19th-ranked TCU women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Texas on Sunday at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium, undone by a single second-half strike and a cruel near-miss at the death.

Geller stands tall, but Texas break through

For nearly 70 minutes, TCU (3-2-1) leaned on goalkeeper Olivia Geller and stayed right with the Longhorns.

Geller, playing all 90 minutes, turned away chance after chance, piling up eight saves – her highest total of the season and just one shy of her career best. Her positioning was sharp, her reactions sharper, and she kept the game level long enough for the Frogs to search for a breakthrough of their own.

TCU pieced together some promising moves in the first half. Grace Vest forced a save with a shot on goal, and the Frogs found pockets of space in the attacking third. The final ball never quite matched the buildup, though, and the sides went to the locker room knotted at 0-0.

The tempo lifted after the break. TCU managed five shots in the second half and pushed higher up the pitch, but the decisive moment belonged to Texas.

In the 68th minute, Ava McDonald found the opening the Longhorns had been chasing and drilled home what proved to be the winner, giving Texas a 1-0 lead and silencing a crowd that had been on edge all night.

Inches from an equalizer

The response from TCU came late and almost brought the house down.

With five minutes left, Kamdyn Fuller rose to meet a cross and powered a header toward goal. The ball deflected off a Texas defender and seemed destined to spin over the line. Instead, it clung to the wrong side of it, staying out by inches as gasps rippled through the stands.

That was the moment. The Frogs kept pressing in the final minutes, but the equalizer never arrived, and the whistle confirmed a narrow home defeat.

Big stage, big crowd

Bell’s 300th game as TCU head coach played out in front of one of the biggest crowds the program has seen in recent years. The announced attendance of 2,326 marked the largest at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium since October 27, 2022, when 2,539 fans watched the Frogs face Texas Tech.

Several Frogs went the distance alongside Geller. Zoe Cuneio, Grace Coppinger, Evie Baker, Cameron Patton and Fuller each logged the full 90 minutes in a match that demanded concentration and legs to the very end.

Off the bench, Eres Freifeld, Hannah Harms, Madison Taylor, Mackenzie Hilderman and Giovanna Costanzo all saw action as TCU searched for a different attacking rhythm. Bella Diorio led the team with two shots, both on target, as the Frogs tried to test the Texas back line.

Eyes on Big 12 play

Now comes a pause and then a pivot.

TCU gets an 11-day break before opening Big 12 play with a trip to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State on September 17. The nonconference lessons are clear. The margins are thin. The standard is high.
