Swansea City Leads Championship but Faces Key Injury Setback

Swansea City walked out of Lincoln with three points and the Championship lead. They left with a problem too.

Josh Key, Vitor Matos’ only natural right-back, is facing what the head coach admits could be a “lengthy” spell out. The 26-year-old missed Saturday’s gritty 2-1 win at Lincoln City after limping off at half-time in the victory over Burnley a week earlier, and the news is not encouraging.

“Josh will stay out for a little bit – the club will announce it,” Matos said after the game. Pressed on whether that meant a long lay-off, he did not soften the blow. “It could be.”

For a side that has surged to the top of the table, it is a significant setback. Key has been a constant on the right, the one specialist in that role in Matos’ squad, and a key part of the aggressive, front-foot style that has fuelled Swansea’s early-season rise.

With Key sidelined, the responsibility fell to academy graduate Filip Lissah at Sincil Bank. Naturally a central defender, the 21-year-old was pushed out to right-back and asked to cope in a high-pressure away game with the league leadership on the line.

He answered.

Lissah produced a composed, disciplined display on the flank as Swansea dug in for a hard-fought win, even if there was a reminder of his inexperience. A booking means he is now just one yellow card away from a one-match suspension, a detail Matos cannot ignore with his options already stretched.

“We all know how important Keysey is for us,” Matos said. “We have Fil who played a massive game today, but we understand that all we can do now is help Keysey to recover and then adjust the team in terms of our idea and keep moving forward.”

That is the challenge now. Swansea have a three-week pause before they are back at it with a home fixture against Norwich City on Saturday, 10 October. It is a welcome breather, but it also marks the calm before a storm of fixtures.

Norwich’s visit opens a punishing run of seven league games in just 28 days. Top of the Championship, short of right-backs, and heading into the most intense month of their season so far, Swansea know this break cannot be wasted.
