Sunderland vs Fulham: Black Cats Aim for Home Revival

Sunderland step out at the Stadium of Light for the first time in this Premier League season on Sunday, already chasing a response. Matchday two, and there’s a hint of early pressure in the air.

A 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town on opening day has done that.

Regis Le Bris’ side showed flashes at Portman Road – Nilson Angulo hauled them level and the visitors carved out promising attacking moments – but the good work was undone by slack defending late on. For a team that had cruised through pre-season with morale-boosting wins over Stade Rennais and RC Lens, it was a jolt.

Now comes Fulham, and with it the chance to steady the mood on Wearside.

Injuries, suspensions and a reshaped XI

Le Bris has to juggle. Some of it is enforced, some of it tactical.

The big blow is on the left flank. Simon Adingra, a key outlet in wide areas, is out for around six weeks after suffering an ankle injury in pre-season. His absence strips Sunderland of pace and direct running on that side, and forces a rethink in how they stretch teams.

Dayann Methalie, one of the headline summer recruits, must also watch from the stands. His one-match suspension, carried over from yellow-card accumulation in France last season, delays his Premier League bow.

There is fresh energy coming in, though. Jules Ahoka is now fully registered after his move from Royal Antwerp and is expected to be named in the matchday squad. He is likely to start on the bench, but his presence gives Le Bris another option as the game opens up.

At the back, the picture looks brighter. Nordi Mukiele and Omar Alderete have shaken off the fitness issues that dogged their pre-season and are back in contention. Both are pushing to start alongside Thomas Ballard and Reinildo Mandava, giving Sunderland a more robust look after that bruising finish at Ipswich.

Le Bris is not expected to rip everything up after one defeat, but the personnel shifts are significant.

A possible Sunderland XI: Roefs; Meunier, Ballard, Alderete, Mandava; Sadiki, Xhaka; Hume, Le Fee, Angulo; Brobbey.

That setup leans on Granit Xhaka’s control in midfield, the creativity of Enzo Le Fée, and Angulo again tasked with providing incision in the final third, this time in front of a home crowd desperate to see an early-season statement.
