Sheffield United's Late Collapse Against Wolverhampton

Sheffield United goalkeeper Michael Cooper admitted his side “switched off” at the death as Raul Jimenez snatched a 90th-minute winner for Wolverhampton Wanderers at Bramall Lane.

Jimenez struck from close range to seal a 1-0 victory for the visitors, a late twist that leaves the Blades 14th in the early Championship standings and five points adrift of the automatic promotion places.

The decisive moment came when Tommy Doyle’s mishit effort broke kindly inside the box. Jimenez reacted quickest, the Mexico international adjusting his feet to guide the loose ball past Cooper and silence the home crowd.

“In the 90th minute, ultimately, we've switched off and let them in,” Cooper told BBC Radio Yorkshire, his frustration clear.

“Really disappointed with that. We know how disappointed the fans will be going home.

“It's a bit of a sucker punch. Credit to the lads, obviously, the effort was there for 90 minutes but just that split-second against a team like that, as a unit, we can't switch off the way we did. Bitterly disappointing.”

Sheffield United had matched Wolves for long spells, working ferociously out of possession and looking to stay attached to the promotion-chasing pack, but the late lapse turned a solid point into a damaging defeat.

Cooper insisted the work behind the scenes is not in question.

“Everyone's training so hard. The amount of info we're getting from staff is phenomenal. There's no complaints from anyone. It's just about putting the practice into games.”

For a side with promotion ambitions, solving that gap between the training pitch and the final minutes on a matchday will define how long they can afford to linger in mid-table.
