Scott McTominay to Miss Scotland's Nations League Campaign

Scott McTominay will miss Scotland’s upcoming Nations League campaign as he undergoes corrective surgery for a minor heart issue.

Napoli confirmed on Tuesday that the midfielder, a key figure for both club and country, has been diagnosed with what they described as “a mild benign arrhythmia” – an irregular heart rhythm considered non-serious and not a significant threat to his overall health.

The condition rules McTominay out of Napoli’s fixtures in September, including next week’s Champions League clash with Arsenal, a match that was expected to showcase his growing influence in Italy after his move from Manchester United.

It also delivers an early blow to new Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli. McTominay will sit out Pocognoli’s first four games in charge: a double-header against Slovenia, followed by meetings with Switzerland and North Macedonia in the Nations League.

“Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation in the coming days,” read a brief club statement.

Napoli added that the 27-year-old is expected to return after the international break, offering reassurance that his absence should be short-term rather than a lingering concern for club or country.
