Scott McTominay will step away from Napoli duty in the coming days to undergo heart surgery after the club confirmed he is suffering from a “mild benign arrhythmia”.

The 29-year-old midfielder, a cornerstone of Napoli’s recent success since his £25 million move from Manchester United in 2024, will have a corrective cardiac procedure in Italy and is expected to be sidelined until after the upcoming international break.

Napoli move quickly to calm fears

Napoli released a detailed medical update on Tuesday, keen to address growing questions over the Scot’s absence and to ease any panic among supporters.

“Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days. He will be available again after the international break,” the statement read.

Club doctors have stressed that the condition is relatively common in elite sport and does not pose a threat to McTominay’s long-term career. The operation is designed to correct the irregular heartbeat and allow him to resume full professional activity.

For a player who has driven so much of Napoli’s recent identity, the timing is still painful.
