“On Tuesday morning, Scott McTominay underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital,” read the club statement. “The operation was a complete success. McTominay will rest for two weeks and then resume training.”

The player has echoed that message, stressing this was a controlled, pre-agreed step rather than a dramatic intervention. “I'm fine, the procedure was something I'd planned to do with the club for quite a while,” he said recently, underlining that this was about long-term management, not an emergency.

Napoli count the cost

The timing, though, hits Massimiliano Allegri hard.

McTominay watched from the stands as Napoli slipped to a 3-2 defeat away to Serie A champions Inter last Saturday, a breathless contest that only highlighted what Allegri loses without his driving presence in midfield. He will now sit out at least three more games, including a high-stakes Champions League meeting with Arsenal on Wednesday.
