SC Cambuur Fans Injured by Fireworks During Feyenoord Match

SC Cambuur say fans suffered burns, hearing damage and eye injuries after Feyenoord supporters hurled fireworks into home sections during Sunday’s league match, turning a routine Eredivisie fixture into a disturbing safety flashpoint.

The game at the compact, usually raucous Kooi Stadion was halted for around 10 minutes in the first half when a large group of Feyenoord fans in the away end ignited a mass of red flares and began throwing fireworks. Some were launched towards areas packed with Cambuur supporters.

In the aftermath, Cambuur confirmed that five home fans had been injured. The club described the injuries as “burns, hearing damage and eye injuries” and condemned the scenes in a strongly worded statement.

“It should be clear that setting off and firing fireworks is completely unacceptable and has no place in a football stadium whatsoever,” the club said, underlining the seriousness of the incident rather than treating it as another case of overzealous fan behaviour.

Feyenoord moved quickly to distance themselves from what happened. The Rotterdam club said it “firmly distances itself from the unacceptable events” and revealed that head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who served as Arne Slot’s assistant at Liverpool last season, personally apologised to SC Cambuur after the final whistle.

Both clubs now face a tense fallout. Cambuur, promoted back to the Eredivisie last season after three years in the second tier, stressed it will work with authorities to identify and punish those responsible. Feyenoord, for their part, said they will request camera footage as part of efforts to track down the culprits.

The match eventually resumed. The questions about what kind of atmosphere Dutch football is willing to tolerate will linger far longer.
