Saudi Arabia Final Squad Announcement for Gulf 27

Saudi Arabia head coach Georgios Donis will unveil his final squad for Gulf 27 on Wednesday, just days before the hosts begin their bid to end a 23-year wait for Arabian Gulf Cup glory.

The 27th edition of the tournament kicks off in Jeddah on 23 September and runs until 6 October, with the "Green Falcons" under growing scrutiny as the clock ticks down. Saudi TV channel Al-Ekhbariya reported that Donis has set Wednesday as the date to confirm his list, giving him a week to drill his chosen group before the opening whistle.

He will do it without his biggest star.

Captain Salem Al-Dawsari has been ruled out of the competition through injury, stripping Saudi Arabia of their most decisive attacking figure and emotional leader. There is concern on the other flank as well, with right-back Saud Abdulhamid also at risk of missing the tournament, leaving Donis to rework both his dressing room hierarchy and his tactical plans.

The timing could hardly be harsher. Saudi Arabia enter Gulf 27 chasing a title they have not lifted since 2003. Two decades of near-misses and frustration hang over every campaign, and hosting the tournament in Jeddah only amplifies the expectation.

The draw has not offered any comfort. Placed in Group One, Saudi Arabia will face Iraq, Oman and Kuwait, three sides with their own Gulf Cup pedigree and no fear of the hosts. Only the top two teams will reach the semi-finals, turning every group game into a high-stakes test of nerve and depth.

For Donis, Wednesday’s squad announcement is more than a formality. It is the first big call of a reign that will be judged on whether Saudi Arabia can finally turn home advantage into a long-awaited Gulf crown.
