Crystal Palace head coach Sage did not bother to hide his anger after a damaging league defeat left his side still searching for their first points of the campaign – and raised fresh questions over their depth and fitness.

For an hour, Palace clung on. They stayed in the contest, created chances, and matched their opponents’ intensity. Then came the changes.

Sage turned to his bench in the second half, sending on Dwight McNeil, Zavier Gozo and Evann Guessand in an attempt to inject life into tiring legs. Instead, the opposite happened. The team’s level dropped sharply, the structure loosened, and the game ran away from them.

“I think we were able to play 60 minutes, stayed in the game,” he told Sky Sports, frustration clear. “When I made the substitutions, the energy of the team went down. I’m a bit angry with that.

“Both [at my team and myself], we are together. I’m with my team every moment. We had a lot of chances, it’s difficult to have hope against this kind of team without scoring. When you change players, you need more energy, I didn’t find that.”

The result was brutal on the scoreboard. It was only the second time a side managed by Sage has conceded four goals in a league match, the other a 4-1 defeat for Lyon against PSG in April 2024. For a coach who prides himself on organisation and intensity, this cut deep.

Sage pointed to a disrupted build-up to the season and a group still short of full sharpness. “We know we are in a process, we know we have to work. We have to not accept this kind of situation, we deserved a better result,” he said. “Two negative situations at the end. We were late in our preseasons. I think at the moment we need substitutions. You can’t replace fatigue with low energy.”

That line summed up his evening. He needed fresh legs; what he got was a drop in tempo and belief.

The timing could hardly be more delicate. Palace now face a race against the clock in the final days of the transfer window, with Tuesday’s deadline looming and the squad’s lack of depth brutally exposed. Reinforcements are no longer a luxury. They are a necessity.

Next up is a London derby that already feels loaded with significance. Sage takes his team across the capital to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on September 5, still hunting his first points of the season.

A positive result there would do more than just alter the table. It would steady a dressing room rocked by a heavy defeat, restore some faith in Sage’s methods, and set the tone before the campaign pauses for the international break.
