Sadio Mané's Absence Explained by Patrick Vieira

Patrick Vieira has moved quickly to shut down any brewing storm over Sadio Mané’s absence from his first Senegal squad, insisting the Al-Nassr forward was left out purely for fitness reasons and not because of any rift or change in his international status.

The new head coach raised eyebrows across Senegal and beyond when his maiden list dropped without the country’s talisman. For a first camp in charge, and with 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying beginning against Mozambique and Ethiopia, it was a bold-looking omission on paper.

The explanation, though, is simple, Vieira said.

Speaking at his introductory press conference after being officially unveiled on Friday, the former Arsenal and France midfielder revealed he had spoken directly with Mané before announcing the squad and was reassured that the issue was physical, not personal.

“I spoke with Sadio by phone, and he is suffering from a physical problem, which is why he will not be with us in this camp, but he will probably be present in the next camp,” Vieira said, in comments reported by Senegalese outlet Seneweb.

That line matters. It keeps the door wide open for the two-time African Footballer of the Year to rejoin the “Lions of Teranga” as soon as the next international window, easing any fears of a sudden changing of the guard under the new regime.

‘My choice came from the heart’

If Mané’s absence sparked the first wave of questions, the second centred on Vieira himself: why Senegal, and why now?

He answered without hesitation. This was not, he stressed, a move driven by salary or contract size.

“My choice was a decision that came from the heart, and not for the money,” he said, cutting through any suggestion that this was a lucrative late-career stop rather than a genuine sporting project.

According to Vieira, it did not take weeks of negotiation or a drawn-out courtship to convince him. One meeting did it.

“From the very first meeting that brought me together with the federation president, I immediately agreed to take on this challenge,” he explained.

The word “challenge” hung in the air. Senegal are African champions, but they are also entering a new cycle, with expectations sky-high and a generation edging towards transition.

That, in the end, is what pulled Vieira in. The 1998 World Cup winner spoke with clear enthusiasm about the talent he sees coming through Senegalese football and the chance to shape what comes next.

“There was an exceptional generation of players on the verge of emerging, and there was a real opportunity before me to put my top-level experience at their service,” he said.

This is the crux of his project: a coach who has lived the highest level in Europe now trying to transmit that experience to a squad brimming with quality and ambition.

His main objective, he underlined, is to channel that experience into a fresh, structured project with the “Lions of Teranga”, working hand in hand with the federation to build the next version of Senegal.

The first squad list, and the first big talking point around Mané, has already given Vieira a taste of the scrutiny that comes with the job. The real test arrives when that “exceptional generation” steps onto the pitch and tries to turn his words into a new era of results.
