Roony Bardghji Suffers ACL Tear, Transfer Plans Crushed

Barcelona winger Roony Bardghji has suffered a devastating ACL tear in his right knee, a brutal injury that wrecks both his season and his planned summer exit from the club.

The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old Swede damaged the ligament in training on Monday. Tests have revealed a full rupture that will require surgery in the coming days and months of rehabilitation.

Transfer plans shattered

Bardghji had been preparing to leave Barcelona before the transfer window closes on September 1. After talks with the club’s hierarchy and coach Hansi Flick, the message was clear: regular first-team minutes would be almost impossible to guarantee this season.

According to ESPN, Flick spoke openly with the youngster and advised him to look for a new club. Interest quickly surfaced. Barcelona had already received enquiries from across Europe, including from Premier League sides, and negotiations were expected to pick up pace as the window moved into its final weeks.

The club even tried to shield him.

To reduce the risk of injury ahead of a likely move, Bardghji was left out of the squad for Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. He didn’t play a minute. Then came Monday’s training session, and with it the worst possible outcome: the very injury everyone had been trying to avoid.

Just like that, the market closed on him.

A cruel repeat

This is not Bardghji’s first battle with this specific nightmare. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in his right knee. He suffered the same serious injury in 2024 while playing for Copenhagen, the club from which Barcelona signed him last summer for around €2 million.

His first season in Spain brought 28 appearances across all competitions and two goals. On paper, a decent platform. In reality, most of those minutes came from the bench, and his route to the starting XI was already narrowing.

The summer arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi were set to push him further down the pecking order. That context made a transfer feel almost inevitable. Instead, the injury has locked him in.

Season on hold

With the window shutting on September 1, there is now no realistic possibility of Bardghji leaving this summer. He will undergo surgery shortly and then begin a long rehabilitation process in Barcelona, spending the coming campaign in the treatment room and gym rather than chasing a fresh start elsewhere.

For a 20-year-old who had just lined up his next step, it is a savage twist. His future, for now, is no longer about transfers or minutes or pecking orders.

It is about whether he can conquer the same knee, for a second time, and restart a career that has barely had the chance to get going.
