Roma vs Inter: A Title Race Showdown
The Stadio Olimpico gets its first true title‑race crackle of the season on Saturday night. Two games, one story: Roma and Inter arrive with 100% records in Serie A, yet only one of them is used to living at this altitude.
Inter, the reigning Scudetto holders, have won their last five league trips to Roma. They know this stadium, this pressure, this kind of night. Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma, reborn and buzzing, are desperate to prove they belong in that same breath.
Both sides sit on 12 points from four games, Roma on top by goal difference. The table says they’re equals. History says otherwise.
Roma’s new edge, old scars
Roma’s start has been clean and efficient. They opened with a 2-1 win over Atalanta at the Olimpico, then went to Torino and handled their business 2-0 on Monday. Useful wins, controlled performances, but not yet the kind of scalps that bend a title race.
In Europe, they held their nerve in Istanbul, drawing 1-1 at Fenerbahçe in the Champions League, Bryan Cristante on the scoresheet. That point keeps their campaign steady, but it has cost them bodies. Evan Ndicka is unavailable, Manu Koné is still a doubt, though Wesley has shaken off a knock and is fit again.
Gasperini’s problem isn’t form. It’s the badge in front of him. He has beaten Inter just five times in 32 attempts – one of the bleakest records of his career. Roma, as a club, have lost nine of their last 11 meetings with the Nerazzurri. Every statistic on that front leans the same way.
This is why the first real examination of Roma’s Scudetto credentials comes with a safety net for the visitors. The “Draw no bet” angle on Inter strips out the stalemate and still offers a strong lean towards the champions at an implied probability of 54.1%.
Bet 1: Inter (Draw no bet) at odds of 1.85
Inter’s resilience, Chivu’s mark
Cristian Chivu has started his Serie A reign with four wins from four. The performances haven’t been smooth, but they’ve been loud.
Inter beat Napoli 3-2 in a wild comeback and then put five past Udinese in a 5-3 thriller on Monday. Both of those home wins came from 2-0 down. Twice they were on the ropes. Twice they walked back to the centre of the ring and swung harder.
That resilience matters in Rome. It’s the kind of trait that decides tight games between contenders.
There are issues. Inter did lose 2-1 away to Real Madrid in the Champions League, a reminder that they can still be exposed at the very top level. Hakan Çalhanoğlu missed the Udinese game with injury, while John Stones limped off at San Siro and faces a late fitness test.
Even so, the spine looks formidable. The expected XI is familiar and imposing:
Inter Milan expected lineup:
J. Martínez; Akanji, Stones, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Mkhitaryan, Zielinski, Carlos Augusto; Thuram, Lautaro
Roma will likely respond with:
AS Roma expected lineup:
Svilar; Mancini, Balerdi, Hermoso; Lulli, Cristante, Pisilli, Wesley; Soulé, Dybala, Malen
That back three without Ndicka is where Inter will aim their punches.
Lautaro, rested and waiting
Chivu made one thing very clear on Monday: Udinese were not the priority. Lautaro Martínez started on the bench, held back with Roma in mind.
Inter still hit five. Lautaro still got his breather.
The Argentine captain has two league goals from 3.1 xG this season. The numbers suggest he’s due, not drifting. Before Udinese, he tore through Napoli with a brace in that 3-2 comeback, a reminder of how quickly he can flip a game.
Last season, he hit 17 league goals and 22 in all competitions. Now he walks into a match where Roma’s back line is patched up and missing Ndicka, one of their key defensive anchors.
At an implied probability of 41.7%, the price on him to score feels generous for a player who lives for these stages.
Bet 2: Lautaro Martínez anytime goalscorer at odds of 2.40
Thuram’s volume game
If Lautaro is the finisher, Marcus Thuram is the constant noise around him.
Thuram has been firing from everywhere. So far this season he’s averaging 7.7 shots per 90 minutes, with 2.6 of those on target. Those are elite, almost reckless attacking numbers, the profile of a forward who refuses to drift out of a match.
With that volume, asking him for three attempts in Rome is hardly ambitious. The implied probability sits at just 56.5%, which underplays how central he has become to Inter’s attack.
He scored against Udinese. He scored in the comeback over Napoli. Chivu trusted him to start at the Bernabéu against Real Madrid in the Champions League, leading the line alongside Lautaro. That partnership should be restored here after some rotation on Monday.
Inter have scored in every game this season. The only real threat to a Thuram shots bet is an early substitution in a high-intensity away fixture. On current form, though, he looks almost untouchable.
Bet 3: Marcus Thuram 3+ shots at odds of 1.77
A title marker in September
Strip away the numbers and this is what remains: Roma want to be taken seriously as Scudetto contenders; Inter already are. One of them walks out of the Olimpico with a statement, the other with questions.
Prediction: Roma 1-2 Inter Milan
Goalscorers: Roma – Malen; Inter – Martínez, Thuram
If Gasperini’s Roma are truly ready to rewrite the script of this rivalry, this is the night they have to rip it up.
