Real Madrid Aims for Valverde's Return Against Roma After Ankle Injury

Real Madrid will have to do without their captain a little longer.

The club confirmed earlier today that Federico Valverde has suffered a grade 3 ankle sprain, the result of a heavy challenge from Atletico Madrid’s Kang-in Lee in the derby at the weekend. The tackle forced the Uruguayan off and the scans have now delivered the full extent of the damage.

The official statement stopped short of giving a recovery date, but initial indications from within the club suggested cautious optimism: a couple of weeks out, then back after the international break. On that basis, the home La Liga fixture against Villarreal looked like a natural return point.

That scenario is quickly fading.

Villarreal unlikely – Roma in sight

Journalist Alberto Pereiro now reports that Valverde’s chances of featuring against Villarreal are “extremely unlikely” as things stand. Real Madrid host the Yellow Submarine on October 10 at the Santiago Bernabeu, and the game appears to be arriving just a little too soon for their captain.

Inside the club, the conversation has shifted. The priority is no longer to rush him back for Villarreal but to have him fully fit for the next game: the UEFA Champions League trip to face AS Roma on October 14.

The plan is clear. No half measures for a league return. Full recovery for Rome.

If his rehab continues without setbacks, Valverde is expected to be ready for the flight to Italy, rather than the domestic clash that precedes it. Given the demands of Mourinho’s system and the intensity of Champions League nights, Real Madrid want their midfield leader at 100%, not patched up.

From doubts to indispensable under Mourinho

The timing of the injury is cruel for a player who had just reasserted his status at the club.

Heading into the new season, Valverde’s position and future at Real Madrid were under scrutiny. An underwhelming previous campaign, capped by a post-season brawl with teammate Aurelien Tchouameni, had raised serious questions. Was he still central to the project? Was a change coming?

Mourinho answered that quickly.

The 28-year-old has started all eight of Real Madrid’s matches across all competitions this season under the Portuguese coach. He has not just filled a shirt; he has contributed with a goal and an assist, but more importantly, with energy, leadership, and balance in the middle of the pitch.

Mourinho has experimented around him. Bernardo Silva, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga – all have taken turns alongside Valverde in the double pivot. The combinations keep changing, but one constant remains: the captain’s name on the team sheet.

Even so, the midfield still feels like a work in progress. Real Madrid often struggle to impose full control and consistent creativity from central areas, a problem that becomes more glaring when Valverde is missing. His absence now forces Mourinho back to the drawing board at a delicate moment in the calendar.

Villarreal at home, then Roma away. One match they will likely have to navigate without their captain. The next, they expect him back in the heart of it, in a stadium and a competition where Real Madrid’s season could start to take real shape.
