Real Madrid Faces Midfield Challenges Ahead of Champions League Opener

Real Madrid received a timely boost on Sunday as Aurelien Tchouameni, Thiago Pitarch and Endrick all rejoined full training ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League opener against Inter Milan.

The sight of the trio back with the group will have pleased José Mourinho, but it comes with a clear caveat. All three have missed more than a month of pre-season work, and their lack of rhythm makes a place in the starting XI highly improbable at this stage.

Mourinho’s problems lie elsewhere too. Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva are all suspended for the European debut, stripping Real Madrid of three key midfield options and forcing the coach into a rethink just days after a bruising, frustrating defeat to Betis.

The timing could hardly be trickier. Inter Milan await, the Champions League anthem is about to roll, and Madrid’s midfield core has been ripped out on the eve of the campaign. Mourinho now faces the task of rebuilding his engine room on the fly, with limited time and reduced options.

For Tchouameni, Pitarch and Endrick, the next few days are all about catching up. They will push to sharpen their conditioning, accelerate their match fitness and absorb as much as possible of Mourinho’s demands on and off the ball. Minutes against Inter, if they come, are likely to be managed and cautious rather than starring roles.

Still, their return changes the mood around Valdebebas. The squad is not yet at full power, but key pieces are finally stepping back onto the pitch. With a new European campaign about to begin and pressure already building, the question is simple: how quickly can Mourinho turn this patched-up midfield into a unit capable of surviving a test as severe as Inter Milan?
