Real Madrid vs Inter: Mourinho Faces Midfield Crisis in Champions League Opener
Real Madrid return to Champions League duty under the lights of the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night, but the glamour tie against Inter Milan comes with a grim reality for José Mourinho. His midfield is shredded before a ball has even been kicked.
Kick-off is at 9 p.m. CEST. The backdrop: a 1-0 league defeat to Real Betis and a squad list that reads more like an injury bulletin than a title contender’s launchpad.
Midfield crisis for Mourinho
The numbers are stark. Eight Real Madrid players are unavailable, and the most painful damage is right in the middle of the pitch.
Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva are all suspended for this Champions League opener. Camavinga and Güler are serving bans carried over from last season. Silva is out after his red card in a previous clash with Real Madrid.
Those three absences rip the heart out of Mourinho’s preferred structure. They also turn every tactical decision into a gamble.
Behind them, the injury list stretches on: Raúl Asencio, Endrick, Éder Militão, Thiago Pitarch and Rodrygo are all sidelined with various problems. They will not feature.
One name sits in the middle: Aurélien Tchouaméni. The Frenchman is the major doubt. He has been working his way back from a muscular issue and could be available, but Mourinho has refused to confirm whether he will start or even be ready to shoulder a full load. Endrick is also listed as a doubt after missing the opening matches with his own muscular problem.
Mourinho has publicly admitted Real Madrid have “known issues” for this match. He also insisted they will compete and play to win. He added that he has “3, 4, or 5 options” to plug the midfield gaps but stopped there, giving nothing away about his actual plan.
For a coach who thrives on control, this is a night that demands improvisation.
Inter arrive with fewer scars
On the other side, Inter Milan travel to Madrid in far better health.
UEFA list no confirmed absentees for Cristian Chivu’s side. The only major concern is Federico Dimarco, who is nursing a knee problem picked up in Serie A against Napoli. His condition is the one cloud over an otherwise clean team sheet.
If Dimarco fails to make it, Inter will have to rework the left flank, a key outlet in their usual system. If he passes his fitness test, Chivu walks into the Bernabéu with a near full-strength squad.
That means the core of this Inter team should be on show: Hakan Çalhanoğlu dictating from deep, Nicolò Barella driving the tempo, Alessandro Bastoni anchoring the back line, Lautaro Martínez leading the attack. It is the kind of continuity Mourinho can only envy this week.
On paper, Inter carry a clear selection advantage. Real Madrid must juggle injuries and three Champions League suspensions; Inter’s main worry is whether one wing-back can go the distance.
Predicted lineups: two back threes, different problems
UEFA’s latest predicted lineups point towards both teams using a back three.
For Real Madrid, Mourinho is expected to stick with a 3-5-2. Thibaut Courtois should start in goal, protected by a defensive trio of Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen.
Across midfield, the projected names underline just how much reshuffling is required. Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella are tipped to operate as wing-backs, with Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham and Brahim Díaz trying to stitch together a functioning engine room in the absence of Camavinga, Güler and Silva.
Up front, the star power remains intact: Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé are expected to lead the line. For all the chaos behind them, that pairing alone can tilt any Champions League night.
Inter’s predicted XI mirrors the shape but not the strain. Josep Martínez is expected in goal, with Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Bastoni forming the back three.
Dumfries is again named at wing-back on the right, with Çalhanoğlu, Barella and Piotr Zieliński across midfield. Dimarco is pencilled in on the left, fitness permitting. Lautaro Martínez and Francesco Pio Esposito are projected to start together in attack.
Both coaches may yet be forced into late changes. Tchouaméni and Dimarco face decisive fitness checks, and any setback for either would reshape the starting lineups. The official teams will drop around an hour before kick-off.
For Real Madrid, this is not just a group-stage opener. It is an early test of how far Mourinho’s patched-up side can bend without breaking in Europe’s hardest competition.
